Terry Dyson is the Man

I agree I am mistaken on the point of needing to defend his character. . I forget about the number of new folks who have not had the honor to know him.. even if it is just on line the man is a straight shooter and has more knowledge on what is the essence of BITOG curiosities than anyone I have ever encounterd. .

I respectfully disagree. Terry is unknown to most of the people that have joined BITOG in the last year and his character was called into question. For those of us who think we know something about his character, speaking up is the right thing to do.

+1

I believe I am the one who started this whole missunderstanding.

I asked if terry had any alternative motive for recommending RLI. As in: dose he work for or distribute for them.

Please know; I was in no way questioning or doubting his integrity or value to this board or to the oil research world. I am a newer user here on BITOG, but I have read Terry's litrature and I fully respect his views and opinions.
I was just wondering if he was involved with RLI. I see now, besides some previous subcontracted work he is not. Even if he was though, his opinions would hold the same standard to me because I know he holds his values high, way before "selling out"

Sorry for ranting!!! I just wanted to set my previous post strait.

Thank you for doing that. I am glad to hear that I misinterpreted what you said.

I have no doubt about Terry's character, but he may have fallen victim to the "new guy on the block" phenomena. RLI is the latest domestic oil pushing lubricant technology. This is cutting edge stuff and Terry may want to be on board with that.

He also made several posts about wanting the US to be less dependant on foreign oil imports. This technology has the potential to do that.

He maybe slightly bias due to these factors. EVERYONE is subject to a bias.
I agree that posting RLI on his website takes away from his upfront objectivity.

I've read a few of his posts and seen him in a few discussions, but I can hardly say I know the man due to my noob status here... So here's the opinion of somebody who knows Terry only as only an experienced and trusted interpreter of UOAs:

When I saw him recommending RLI stuff, I thought that it was strange based on the UOAs I'd seen that showed the oil being... well, not bad, but less than perfect. I figured there was something more to it, but didn't know what. When I clicked on the website I see a message saying "impartial" etc. and right underneath it an RLI endorsement. That was before this discussion ever got started, and my first thought was 'yeah, real impartial.' Personally, I'd put my Ben Franklin to work elsewhere, but that was just my first impression. I may be right or wrong, but that's how it struck me.

Consumer reports is a good magazine because they impartially review products and because they seek to maintain a good reputation for having ethical procedures they will not allow any advertisements or gifts from the companies. They charge their subscriber's a premium for their service to help finance their integrity. I'm willing to pay a premium for that kind of integrity because I can trust it. I don't believe reviews of products in publications or sites that advertise or endorse the same products.

No matter if I'm right or wrong, it doesn't look good. Not for that kind of money, anyway. Again, this is just an impartial 1st impression.

I use Amsoil 0W-20 in both of my family's Honda vehicles. I have no doubt that RLI blends and sells quality products. The real issue for me when it comes to using RLI is cost. By the time shipping charges are factored in, an oil change using RLI costs me more than one using Amsoil. I doubt that I would see reduced wear if I switched from Amsoil to RLI. If RLI did produce UOA's showing less wear in my vehicles, I am convinced that the improvement would be statistically insignificant.

I have used Pennzoil Platinum too and have no complaints. I recommend PP to all of my friends that want to use a synthetic engine oil (Yes, I know PP is Group III) but are unwilling to extend their OCI.

Bottom line, if someone wants to pay for RLI or Amsoil then there is no doubt that they will be getting top notch protection from wear. Pennzoil Platinum also provides excellent protection as evidenced by numerous UOA's, but has the added benefit of being available locally for most folks.

I too enjoyed reading Terry's posts on BITOG. With that being said, he definitely liked some products better than others (LCD's FP+, V-Power, Pennzoil Platinum, RLI, Auto-RX, etc). Some would criticize him over this, but in the final analysis his advice always seemed to be well founded. I do not recall anyone claiming that their engine or transmission had been destroyed after using a product that Terry liked. With this in mind, I never understood why some folks would give him a hard time when he offered free advice. I never got the impression that Terry employed high-pressure sales tactics. Oh well, it is what it is I guess.

Well I like him and I'm stickin' to him. Everyone can say what they want and have their own opinions but I find the guy to be very honest and very knowledgeable.

I think he will help to keep my road-warrior engine on the road day-in/day-out as I need it for work with minimal up-keep costs.

Not only that but I get the experience of learning about the science of oil and engine combustion by products and how they affect my engine which is valuable cost-saving knowledge for the future.

Of this, there is no doubt. But do appearances count? Posting a brand appears to show an inclination. That's all.

Pablo,

I really feel you of all people should stay away from this subject all together.

I was typing more, but it got ugly real fast, so I'll leave it this ..... yes appearances do count... whether it be wearing your RLI cap and sweater or your Amsoil cap and sweater.

I proudly wear that "cap and sweater". I also am proud to know Terry. But what I don't quite understand is why I should not comment on such matters, or why I somehow shouldn't be allowed to have and state an opinion in regard to RLI/Terry or any other BITOG topic. Is it because of my bias? My affiliation with Amsoil? The fact that I'm a site sponsor? That makes exactly zero sense. I won't "stay away" from subjects in which I show an interest.

I have said nothing malicious about Terry here, no matter what people want to read between the lines. Terry has an inclination toward RLI? So what? I'm good with that.

Well, I emailed Terry this thread as I figured he would enjoy seeing it. He email me back and said I could post his email, so here it is for all to enjoy.

Johnny ,

I did get a kick out of it and if I am bought out by anyone its Jesus Christ because I sure ain’t getting rich in this oil analysis /tribological business !!

BTW let people know I enjoyed seeing that thread and for the naysayers on RLI BIOSYN to try it before they poo poo it. I believe is science driven appropriate fluids.

Like SF folks that can afford it would do well to buy and stock pile RLI BIOSYN because I do not know how they can stay in business with the economy slowing and big oil about to eat them alive.

My link of RLI does not even work so how marketing driven is that !! J LOL….

Finally share with the group the reason I cannot post there for myself is that I am blocked by BITOG management.

A website I helped found blocks me because I did just what many there now accuse me of being, bought out . I called a spade a spade and suffered the consequences but sleep real well at night because Dyson Analysis is independent and poor enough to prove it .

Johnny is a good man. I haven't been here long, but I can tell already.

... Now back to ordering my pizza!

Thanks for that Johnny - really helps us understand the situation. I still say it looks bad for him to have the RLI mentioned, but that's a business decision I guess. I'm curious what he's talking about - somebody gimme a link, please?

Which topic do you mean? The broken link on the Dyson Analysis (dot com) home page? The fact that he's banned from BITOG now? The fact that he 'called a spade a spade?' Which?

He pretty much tells everyone that. Not saying he is correct or incorrect, but changing to RLI is not always the solution.

FWIW, he told me told GC works really well in my type of engine, and he told me to try PP 5w-20 in my wife's acura.

greenaccord02, I believe that specific comment is a reference to a private discussion between Terry and site ownership/management. A post that may or may not be useful to you is post# 967782, but that's under the old URL system the board used to use. Under the current system (and ignoring posts which may have been deleted for some reason), Terry did not make that post, and it's difficult to find specific post numbers.

The board owner posted, in the thread initiated by Terry's final post here, her refusal to disclose the specific nature of the disagreement. If you search for all posts by username Terry in the last 5 years, you'll see his post and her response a bit later on.

I don't think anyone should be banned for having an opinion, someone being nasty towards another member yes, but having a difference of opinion ... no. If I had known this before I wouldn't have donated to the BITOG site, because this leaves a bad taste in my mouth...
