First and foremost, my intention was to NOT upset anyone with this, I was just curious on several things from the 2024 totals thread and went rogue to get the answers. @Superbuick96 does an amazing job with this and is the GOAT. I was curious to see if Mobil1 was losing its lead, if the VRP was up and coming, etc. etc... I'm a Data Analyst at heart, so tend to nerd out on these things.

Feel Free to yell at me or tell me I made wrong assumptions, happy to learn or explain my train of thought(s). But please keep it nice and don't make fun of me 😁

I have not completed the analysis, not sure when I will be able too, work has picked up and my time will be diverted away. I tried to run a script but too many formatting styles for me to dial in, had to go and do this manual. Plus there are folks here who just post pictures. This is what I compiled so far, literally less than 5 mins, but again I need to get back into work for a crapbaskets worth of fire drills.

I compiled all the oil changes in terms of:
  • Oil - Company and Series (ex. Valvoline Restore and Protect)
  • Vehicle - Make and Model
  • I did not compile user name information.
  • I did not take into account Oil filters just yet... I can tell you that if I had to place money on it, FRAM is the leader.
    • I will revisit this and append to this analysis at a later date, its bugging me and I'm slapping myself for not looking at this earlier on.
Data Assumptions:
  • Date Range: 1/1/2025 - 4/30/2025 (Jan 1st 2025 to Apr 30th 2025).
  • 592 changes conducted.
  • Only Cars/SUVS/Hypercars/Supercars/Trucks were in the analysis.
    • Analysis does NOT include motorcycles, ATVs/UTVs/Tractors/Lawnmowers etc.. you get the picture...
  • Unknown Oil and Series of Oil -
    • basically means either the Poster did not know, and stated such.
    • the Poster only listed what was added into the vehicle
  • Full Synthetic:
    • Either listed by Poster as FS, Full, Full Synthetic, etc..
    • Assumed FS based on year of vehicle if they did not list a Series (ex. Super Tech 5w-20)
  • Synthetic Blend:
    • Listed by Poster as SB, Syn, etc..
    • Assumed SB based on year of vehicle, if they did not list a Series (ex. Super Tech 5w-20)
  • Conventional:
    • Listed by Poster as Conventional
    • assumed by year of vehicle
  • I have several spellings to correct and this could impact some counts, but not drastically to dethrone folks from positions.
  • Frankenbrew:
    • y'all just love to cause havoc.
    • I did my best to name them out in the Series section, if they provided dosing measurements, then left to right will be from most to least.
    • y'all are a Special Breed and God Bless y'all. I do not have the intestinal fortitude to do what y'all do.
My observations, answers to questions that I had, questions to people on the forum:
  1. Mobil1 still holding strong, however there are several users, one of whom I assume is a mechanic and had a bulk supply of Mobil1 ESP.
  2. Valvoline Restore and Protect is by far the most popular choice in 2025 and has boosted Valvoline up. Now, will this continue as people finish the OCI changes and revert back to different oils? Who knows? Well.. we will...later on, with more data coming in, and if I don't get kicked off here...please don't.. 😥
  3. Do Mopar Engines love Pennzoil as noted on Ram forums?
    1. I did not see that correlation I was expecting, kind of bummed out, but I think Ram owners probably spend more time on those forums.
    2. As a Ram Owner, my next OCI for my main Ram will PUP, Farm Truck (2014 Ram 1500 single cab, 5.7L) is starting her VRP treatment next month. Currently in Mobil1 EP camp, but I've found that the engine is noisy with Mobil1, Ram Forums say PUP will do better for Hemi.
  4. Swepco 306 is really popular, mostly with trucks mainly older trucks.
    1. I wish I had years to show, but I noticed many users with older trucks like it this year as noted earlier.
    2. really popular this year, I captured it a couple of time from the OUT counts.
  5. Shell oils seem like a solid #3, w/ Pennzoil, Quaker State, Rotella, and Shell (some international folks posted Shell Helix I think).
  6. Supertech -- woahhhh ..
    1. solid 4th place .. Are we seeing trust with Store brands or is this more of a times are tough, Supertech is good enough to get the job done?
  7. Kirkland -- woahhhhh
    1. solid entry, similar thoughts/assumptions as w/ Supertech.
  8. Warren Oils doing solid w/ ST and Kirkland.
  9. Fram...woahhhhh
    1. really did not see or expect that.
  10. Frankenbrewers:
    1. y'all are a special breed. Love y'all but man did y'all make this more of a pain lol.
  11. Mobil1 ESP --
    1. Has this always been an oil people here like?
    2. Again with some regrets, I should've captured posting dates, but man it seems like Mobil1 ESP just took off around early March.
  12. I'll do my best to clean up and make pretty charts etc.. that I know folks want. If I don't get canned.
    1. Sorry to beat a dead horse up and down for extra HP.
    2. Hopefully this helps some folks out as much as it helped me out...
    3. @Superbuick96 is the man with all of this and I mean no disrespect. Just wanted to deep dive into this and get some answers.

Redid some of the analysis:
Double check my math. I fat fingered Castrol and HPL so it had 2-3 spaces, so when I trimmed the first time it only removed one space, which I didn't realize until now with Excel. I cleaned it up a bit, Castrol is in 4th while Super Tech is at 5th, but its still really really close.

Attrition Rate is essentially the percentage of Brands that saw folks pour out and use another brand to fill in. (Ex. Unknown should be 100% because folks know what they're pouring in? I hope?).

Retention Rate is Brands that see folks pour out their old batch and dump in the same stuff.

The Attrition Rate plus the Retention Rate should line up to 100%.

Gained Customer is a percentage of Switched 2 this Oil (wasn't in OUT OIL but dumped in for IN Oil).

Same Oil as Out and Switched 2 this Oil should add up to the In Oil total for 2025. (In total it should be 592 changes).

To the very end, I realized which led to this post, I had the end label of % of Brands which had the previous calculation of total for each brand and series (Valvoline Restore and Protect) as a percentage to the total vs as a percentage to brand itself. Essentially I had VRP as : 61/592 at first, but should've been 61/104. I am trying to show that Restore and Protect accounts for 59% of all Valvoline Products (excluding Napa), while Mobil1 ESP accounts for 37% of Mobil1 Products.

Did my best to clean this up while I wait for some scripts to finish running at work. 😅
