Hi,
Gary - You said:
"GC came around as the panacea for the future alphabet soup Euro spec's .. we went from VW50x.x on up in (it seemed) monthly updates. It had more revisions than Windows"

Castrol Formula SLX 0W-30 (the original "GC") first came out in 1995! It was an SH/CF API Quality rated lubricant and ACEA A3-96/B3-96 then. It was VW500.00 and VW505.00 (issued 11/92) at release. It was withdrawn from sale in OZ about 2001 after a less than succesful "career" here

It was introduced as one of the original low phosphorous/low chlorine lubricants

Ahh, good ol' Castrol 95. Perhaps oil bottlers should name their products "Pennzoil 2008" or "MaxLife 2000" just like Windows revisions. It might (very iffy 'might') make it easier for people to understand that the newer the oil, the better.

So the dollar stores would sell their SA-oil as "Coastal 1934".

Gary / Doug, you're onto something here.

If they do sell it under those names as Microsoft does with it's operating systems... Then let's hope that the oils don't cause the problems that Microsoft does when their O/S first come out! hehehee

All in all, there seems to be far more opinion and considerably less fact to be found here than there was in the past.

In addition, folks started listening less to the posters that know the subjects of which they speak, i.e. Mola & Terry among some others. I imagine this is due partly to a lack of critical thinking skills. They can't determine who the experts are &, for example, go for #s of posts instead.

Castrol-98... SP1 keeps causing my engine to stall prematurely... So I purchased a hot-fix and dumped it in, now I have no sound from my radio...

I prefer the Ubuntu revision system

first part of the number is the year, 2nd part the month.

Ubuntu 8.10 = 2008 . October No need for SP numbers that way.

A 1995 Honda with a 2.2L engine that consumes a quart every 800-1000 miles. It has a good case of blow-by. I'll see how it does.

I'm guessing with that kind of consumption the cat isn't working very well anyways.........

My buddy had to put that (I think it was bardhal) engine goo in his Prelude because it was a smoking MACHINE. It burned more oil than gas. Junk kept the smoke down for a week at least......

That's just the answer I was hoping for. Too bad about the cat... Mine is still good. Now to look for a similar oil with less cat killers.

Hi, Doug..

My point was that there was very limited distribution for Euro spec'd oils here in the states. Most were limited to the dealers only (or so it seemed) and none of the "off the shelf" oils were meeting VW/AUDI/BMW spec's. GC was put on the map due to it being one of the ONLY available oils that you could buy for less than $15/quart at the service facility.

I'm sure the rest of the planet had plenty of Euro spec'd oils for their Euro cars. Most countries aren't like the States.

I'll add a little. Terry, to me, is a stand up guy. Very honest and willing to provide solutions that work, not just big names, etc.

I'll be using his services in the spring. I want the car to last, and I want to use what's best for MY engine. I think Terry can help me accomplish this.

FWIW, I can corroborate all that has been said regarding Terry's integrity and the reasons why he is no longer on BITOG.

I know for a fact that Terry likes RLI Biosyn, because of the work he and I did on the 5W40 formulation and testing, his own personal testing, and the data he has gained with hundreds of UOA's on the oil that have passed through his lab. There are some unique qualities to this oil that are not seen in other oils on the market, although it is my understanding that the major players are attempting to duplicate RLI's performance in their own labs, in an attempt to create formulations that do not infringe on the RLI patents.

I myself am proof of the fact that censorship is alive and well on this board. Because of having been banned, I now refrain from writing in any way that might appear negative (even if it is based on truth, facts, and reality) concerning any current BITOG sponsor, or bring up Terry's name or lab out of the context of another persons posting.
