Oil for B58 Ineos Grenadier

Is it common for new engines like this b58 to make oil when new? I did a 5100 mile UOA and had 3% dilution. Just changed oil today for a trip to Moab will change when I get back.

Hmm no. 3% is fairly high for BMW DI engines. I'm not sure whether it has anything to do with specific tunning for Ineos.

I think it is too low for leaky injector.
How long did you run engine before taking sample?

The engine had 6209 miles total. If you mean in the driveway, maybe 5min to warm it up good. Oil had 5100 miles total.

That might be your culprit. You have to get the oil to the operating temperature, then drive it 10-15min at that temperature. I usually do a sample after driving it for at least 30 minutes. You want all contaminants to evaporate.

Watching oil temps recently surprised me. Oil didn't get hot until the car was running over 70 mph for about 10 minutes...this was AFTER the engine was "warm". Starting a cold engine and running it 5 minutes is not sufficient.

An ambient temperature startup uses a much richer fuel mixture than the mixture utilized in a hot engine. Inevitably and unavoidably, some of that fuel passes the rings and ends up in the oil. Until the engine gets much hotter than just 5 minutes of running, this increase in fuel is essentially a contaminant in your Oil Analysis. Run that puppy on the highway at a decent speed for a while (30 minutes?) prior to sampling, and you may find your fuel % drops significantly compared to a 5 minute "warm up" before sampling.

As @Titan explained, you will have fuel in oil. Hence A LOT of fuel in oil samples of people running short trips.
Besides, that is what instructions for taking sample will say.

Oil warms up way after coolant. In winter coolant temperature in my BMW is at operating level already after 2-3mls. Oil sometimes doesn’t reach operating temperature in 10mls. Stick shift and oversized oil cooler though don’t help.

Thanks for the heads up. I'm on a 4k mile trip going from Houston to Moab and off roading. I already need a new bumper, skid plate, and tow hook in the front. I'm going to change it when I get home and I'll do another analysis. Should be roughly 5k miles on it again and I'll make sure to run it longer before getting the sample.

Have at it mate, plenty to criticise here! No country is above criticism. Although its Americans do have a unique tendency to take it personally... I level the exact same criticism at Australia - obsession with stupid large vehicles. Its bloody annoying and is having real impacts on the road toll which we had going down for decades with strong seat belt and drink driving enforcement, but the advent of big "trucks" has literally reversed that. Pedestrian death particularly are spiking as well of course in normal vehicles these thing plow through. Its says a great many things about what's wrong with Australia sadly...

If I won lotto, an Inios Grenadier would be high on the list - for its intended purpose of heading bush. NOT for daily use in suburbia...
