I was looking to do an oil change on my father's car. He recently got a 2019 X3 M40i with the B58 engine. Just barley hit 14k miles. I have read alot of different oil threads and after searching I have not really seen any discussion on Valvoline 0w30 and 0w40 euro oils.

It seems to meet or atleast be "recommended" for BMW LL01, LL04, LL01FE and LL12FE. Compared to other oils (such as Penzoil Euro oils) it has more BMW oil grade recommendations that I have seen in one specific engine oil.

I am just curious if anyone has an opinion or has a VOA on this oil?

I am considering buying it and trying it out. May even do a VOA if there isn't one already available. The downside is it is only sold in quarts or 5 gallon box quantities.

It's probably similar to Pennzoil Euro LX 0w30 but without GTL.

It is low-SAPS oil, and because of low sulphur gas now in the US, it is applicable in diesel and gas engines.
However, if you are going that route, Low-SAPS oil, go Mobil1 ESP 0W30 available in Wal Mart.

I've been reading about Mobil 1 ESP 0W30 but I can't seem to find the HTHS value and I see it does not carry any BMW approvals or recommendations. I tried looking at the Mobil 1 website and couldn't find anything but maybe I haven't searched hard enough. I don't doubt it's a great oil, esp based on what I've read.

Many tout ESP 0W-30 at WM as a great oil, and it is suggested that it is a fine substitute for Pennz Euro L 5W-30 (also available at WM).

However, ESP 0W-30 does not appear to have any LL approval (correct me if I'm wrong on that) whereas Euro L is LL-04.

ESP 5W-30 does appear to have LL-04 approval, but it's not available at WM.

Is there any significance to the lack of LL-04 designation for ESP 0W-30?

Not sure why, I would lose sleep.
But, ESP 5W30 goes for $37 for 5qt at local Auto Zone and AAP.
But if WM is place where you shop, go Mobil1 0W40.

ESP 0W-30 has a minimum HT/HS of 3.5 in accordance with the approvals it has.

And as for a lack of Longlife-04 approval that wouldn’t bother me in the least. It does have VW 504 00 approval which for me would be equivalent. Plus Porsche C40. And Mercedes-Benz 229.52. If it’s really an issue with you then get Pennzoil Euro L also at Walmart. I used that for quite a while in my VW.

I see.

The BMW LL specs seem to be very well respected here-- caused me wonder about using an oil that doesn't have it when there are so many that do have it (including the 0W-30 Valvoline that's the subject of this thread).

As for me, per the discussion yesterday, the less expensive QS and Valvoline 5W-40's are perfectly fine for my old-school engines and would probably be my first choice at WM (assuming regular pricing on all).

But if a great sale pops up on ESP 0W-30 (as it did with the Euro L last year), I'll not hesitate to buy it given you guys' lack of concern about the LL-04 spec.

Thanks!

I'm so jealous of those with WM that carry the Pennzoil Euro L. Mine hasn't carried it in several months. They cleared it out then replaced the spot on the shelf

There is only one WM in my area that has any Euro L on the shelf, and it's not particularly cheap (or expensive, for that matter).

The only reason I have any Euro L is because I was able to jump on the Amazon deal last Feb in which I got 5qt 3-packs for $42.38 ($14.13 a piece for the 5qt jugs!).

At that time I knew nothing about Euro oil, but at that price I just did a quick search here at bitog, saw that people liked it, and clicked "buy!"

Several people on the thread discussing that sale are convinced that it will happen again (including @f355spider who just posted!).

Given my new-found preference for Euro oil, I'll definitely be jumping on it again if it does!

That was a great deal on Amazon for the Pennzoil Euro L. I grabbed some in Dec 23 then Feb 24, but it has not been available at any price since February of this year. I noticed today it is back up and available, matching the price of Walmart of $26.44, so maybe that is a sign it might come back on sale soon? But to be honest, $26.44 is not a bad price...but the $14.13 comes out cheaper than even Kirkland Signature on sale.

Yep-- I noted that reappearance on Amazon as well and took it as the same sign of hope that you did.

If that sale only happened once every 18 months or so, I would be able to get enough at a low enough price that Euro L would be my only oil for every vehicle I have and I wouldn't even look for anything else.

I'll stop now on this Euro L discussion-- don't want to clutter up the OP's Valvoline thread too much.

As for the Valvoline 0W-30, it does look good (as far as I can tell), and I'll be monitoring for any sales on it.

I only bought a few cases, due to another forum user stating for the past couple years they would offer this deal three or so times a year. So it was a surprise when it never came back this year...crossing fingers. If it does I will load up, as I can use it in everything but my Ferrari. I will use up my last four jugs on oil changes on my BMWs in April.

That Valvoline looks to be good oil on paper. But there is a difference between having certain approvals vs being "recommended for..." even though it's likely great oil (I mean, it is approved for VW and Porsche applications).

If it were my BMW, I would be inclined to use an oil that actually carries the LL01 approval, and officially on BMW's list of approved oils. And I'd also be inclined to use a 5w40 flavor, just for a little extra insurance.

The engine in question can use LL22fe, LL01, LL04, LL01fe, LL12fe, and LL17fe. These are a combination of both ACEA Cx and Ax/Bx based (Xw40 down to Xw20) oils. The presence of sulphur levels in the fuel, OPF (Otto Particulate Filter), and CAFE/Emissions requirements will determine which oil BMW recommends for a specific market.

Understood; my point was more so that it carries none of the BMW approvals. Rather, it's just "recommended for..." which to many won't cut it, especially if you have warranty to worry about maintaining.
