Microgard Select - No Love?

.

A Local Bartender down in Houston named Scotty does car videos and he even prefers the Premium Guard/Microgard filters and funny enough.. he cut one open below and once again the pleat integrity is perfect at 10k.

Yea not a Scotty fan although despite everything he has said wrong over the years he also says a lot of things right. Either way this is another good example, very impressed I might have to skip the FRAM Ultra run on my next oil change and go directly for the Microgard.

My only problem is it is not made in USA, yes it seems the manufacturer has pride and very good quality control and builds these filters very well but I prefer made in USA, but can't complain much when the Toyota filters I been running on my Toyota are made in Thailand.

By the way I think he is now a local bartender down in Tennessee.

5 year old Scotty YT video ... so guess it's what they were like back then. Doesn't look like it has changed much, but would need a more recent cut open to compare.

I shared a video before it, looks like the only major difference is the color of the gasket and anti-drainback valve being brighter on the newer ones. I didn't even notice the date on Scotty's video so that is even better that tells me this manufacturer has been consistent for a long time in quality control.

Interesting... And yes, Scotty's gonzo videos get straight to the point... but that's YouTube these days. I too find it interesting these filters haven't changed over the years. Consistency. That's one of the main reasons I've made the change.

After reading this post I went and bought a Microgard Select MSL57899. I compared it to the NAPA Gold 7899 I had bought. Seems to weigh more but the thing that impressed me was the "bigger" holes in the metal tube. I'll run it and open it and take a look. Just looking at both right now I'd rather have the Microgard Select then the NAPA Gold. Sorry no pictures.

My thoughts are pretty much the same. It just seems like a better filter (to me) as they've been this way for awhile. No gimmicks...

What other "brands" does Premium Guard sell under ? I need a few filters soon and Rockauto has

VARIOUS MFR PG4612EX Extended Life; Spin-On

Those should be Premium Guard made, yeah ? Just who knows that name will be on them....

They're OK, I have a few of them labeled Federated XL, but I just don't see how they are worth a premium over a Fram Tough Guard, Ultra, Titanium, even an Endurance. Or for that matter, a Pure One or NAPA Gold (if you hit the fleet sale). Vietnam has come a long way, but if I'm buying a 3rd world oil filter, it's going to be a $2-3 Premium Guard, not a $12 syn blend one,

I think you might be replying to me, so the PGs at Rockauto are under $5/each. I've used Microgard Select filters and am impressed with them. Well, I should say, they don't have a start-up rattle like some filters do on my wife's car. I also have an expiring discount code from RA. Worst case, if I don't like something about it on my car, I can swap the filter early and don't even have to add (much) oil.

Ecogard , some Pentius afaik and I guess some of these new Carquest but not sure if Carquest has the extended life..

No, sorry, not replying to you specifically. I just don't see how they're worth the $11-12 that O'Reilly gets for them. Now, get them under $5, as long as the shipping doesn't run up the price too much, they're a pretty good 5000-7500 option. I'm just not convinced they're worth a lot more than a standard Premium Guard for a short OCI.

Decided to go straight for the Microgard Select instead of the FRAM Ultra.

Will be running a Microgard Select MSL51040 on my Chevy and a MSL51348 on my Toyota, just got to wait for a clear day to do the oil changes. From what I can see down through the center core holes the pleats look to be perfect and the filter is very clean just like in every other example shown.

Both boxes do say Made in Vietnam.

Awesome~! And I don't have any stock in the company either! I just think it's a better filter than the FRAM. (Dislike Louvers). Plus... Why not support a manufacturer that isn't going back & forth with all the "Hype".... I just like how well made these filters are. Let is know how you like them!

After some research, just bought a Microguard Select for my MiL's (and soon to be our Daughter's) 2016 X3. VERY well made filter, virtually identical to a Mann, even the appearance and texture of the media. COO Vietnam I'll post a pic when I do the change.

Microguard may be on my good list for the DD's.
No Louvers! Yes, very well made filter.

I don't have an O'Reilly's by me, but I do have an AutoZone and they have an STP extended life and that's made in China is that the same filter?
Don't premium Guard, Ecogard and microguard aren't they all the same filter? The premium line?
