Hello All. Question re upsizing the oil filter on a 4th gen ('19 thru '26) Mazda3 with the 2.5l normally aspirated engine.

Has anyone used a MicroGard Select MSL57356 on this car? It looks to be the same spec in every way as the MSL57002 except the 57356 is a bit taller (85mm) vs the 57002 (70mm) and this was confirmed when contacting O'Reilly Auto Parts. Just would like to be 100% sure before I put the taller filter on my car. Thanks.

Yeah I am pretty sure that will work because these guys in this thread below are discussing the Fram 7317 going on the Mazda 2.5 and that Microgard MSL57356 is the same size as the 7317.

It's the MicroGard Select MSL57356 ... looks like you left the "5" out.

The Carquest Premium that crosses over to the 7317 is the 84356.

I haved used both MSL57002 and MSL57356 on my Mazdas and neither has blown up yet. I dont like how far down the 57356 hangs but anything that hits it is likely going to hit the oil pan first so it would likely be a catastrophic mess one way or another.

What problem you looking to solve here? If in the rare event you have a filter failure that is not cataloged for your application, the filter maker has grounds to deny any liability.

Thanks for weighing in. Do you own a 4th gen (2019-2026) Mazda3?

Hootbro, No problem here, just looking for a potentially better solution to a dinky oil filter. The '19 - '26 Mazda3 has a splash guard to protect the filter.

You smarter than the Mazda Engineers? You're looking for a solution without a problem. I have two of these engines. Use what Mazda says to use. You're gaining nothing by using an oversized filter. Absolutely zero. If you're under warranty, you won't be if an issue arises.

1) You're answering a question that wasn't asked. 2) Your contention that a larger filter provides no benefit is debatable to say the least.

Lol. Okay boss. It's not debatable at all. I would love to see proof that it matters. Nonsense. If it mattered, they would provide a larger filter. I have never heard of a SkyActive engine failing because the filter was too small. It's ridiculous to be even having this conversation. No reason to debate, proof is in the pudding. Longevity of these engines with the OEM filter size is proof enough. Seriously, what, exactly, do you think your getting with a fraction more media? What are you trying to fix? Again, nonsense.

Something else to consider is larger can size doesn’t always equal more media. You’d have to cut them open and measure the media. Here is a great resource ⬇️

Thank you SO MUCH for posting this. I had heard about it a while back when looking for larger / quality filters for M20x1.5 applications (Honda, Nissan, etc). I can't believe I've missed out on that fantastic collection of data!

Reactions: GW.
The small 6607 can filter is fine, but the larger 7317 size is an easy upgrade. If you have the clearance, it’s a no brainer.
Agree, it won't hurt anything (same relief / bypass setting from what I can tell.) Interestingly, If you have a car that takes a 7317 size and go to a quicklube, about 99% chance you're driving out of there with a 6607 size filter on your car. A lot of those shops carry a limited amount of sizes, so 6607 would be the one they stock.
