54 week old LG refrigerator failure

Buy a cheap basic fridge. Freezer on top, fridge on bottom. No ice maker, no chilled water. Clean the dust off the coils etc at least once a year. Thats your best bet to get something that lasts a reasonable time for a reasonable cost. If the timer, defroster etc goes its cheap and easy to fix. Anything big lets go just scrap it. Repeat as needed.

I bought a Frigidaire 15 years ago for $450 from Lowes. At the time I decided against the energy star rated one for about $100 more dollars. It is a top freezer basic style but that's why I bought it because they are the longest lasting styles. It's still keeping my food/beverages cold 15 years later. It may not be fancy but this post tells me why I'm $2500 ahead.

I see wild claims about the price of new refrigerators. To my wife and I, shopping around you will find they are not expensive, quite cheap if you ask me, no different then almostt two decades ago with the features that you get.
Shopping sales we got our AWESOME counter depth LG for our new home at stupid cheap price, I think at the time (this year) $1,400. or less.
Freaking gorgeous looking machine blew away anything in the showrooms. Great water dispenser/filter/icemaker too.
I know my ears are older now but my wife's still good, we cant even hear the thing when it runs. Its crazy *LOL*
Refrigerators are no more expensive or less expensive than when we bought our last one 15 years ago. I wish cars were the same price!

Be sure to let us know how awesome your LG is doing at the two year mark.

I haven't read this entire thread but I see a lot of posts that say an appliance "died" or "took a dump" which says nothing about what went wrong. My thought is the owner doesn't know. All my appliances are 20 years old and have survived with simple and inexpensive repairs. My Bosch dishwasher for example has "died" twice in the past 20 years. Once it quit heating the water. It was a burnt connection on the circuit board which took a drop of solder to fix. The next time it "died" it quit circulating water. I found the water pump impeller separated. A couple drops of JB Weld fixed it. My latest appliance to "die" was my Kitchenaid built in microwave. A $38.00 magnetron fixed that.

We’ve had a French door LG with dual ice makers for 5.5 years now with no issues, and we use A LOT of ice. Knocking on wood it keeps going. Wife likes it so much she wants a LG side by side to replace a crappy Frigidaire at our beach house.

Love our LG side by side in the above pictures I posted from Best Buy. Been on this earth a long time and this is my favorite ever. Granted it's only 6 months old. Just amazing quality look, feel, construction.
With that said (we knew this before we bought it) the ice maker is not going to fill a cooler with ice, nor will it support a big party. Its purpose is pretty much a fill your glass with ice thing, not your cooler.
We too use a lot of ice and it's good for that. For coolers we have this amazing type of ice packs that most people dont know exists. It was my wife who found them. They are called "Cooler Shock"

Here's a quote from a guy posting on a BBQ forum that's quite popular. The thread was about Samsung refrigerators but this cropped up posted yesterday.
"tomorrows my last day as a Sears service tec, will miss working but I will learn to like it , hopefully put my last LG compressor in this afternoon, have replaced close to 400 in the last 4 years if I aint mistaken."

100 LG compressors replaced in a year by one service tech at one company from one office/shop.
Good luck with your stunningly crafted LG.

The worst part about my LG is that the serviceman talked me into repairing it. My initial plan was to scrap it but after 5 service calls and $920 dollars thats where I am (the parts were warrantied) I should have trusted my instinct. Along with the weak compressors apparently the LG has issues with plumbing in inaccessible areas that corrodes and fails. After 2 compressor sets thats what they concluded on this pile of ........

Really?? Surprising as LGs have "Just amazing quality look, feel, construction."😂

The only thing worse than an LG fridge is an LG washer.

Oddly the TVs and DW's are decent. (TV's I have owned multiple, no issues, DW's by reputation/ratings, only own Bosch)

Samsung - just no. No way. They paid for the results. It happens.
Ive purchased 3 major appliances this year and like everything in life I research the ____ out of stuff like this because I enjoy doing so.
I know more about LG appliances and PAST issues than anyone, including the "repair guys" who do not like Korean appliances. Any repair person doesnt like any product that they do not understand. Remember the old days as cars started to have sensors and computers? All those places closed up, they trashed the advancements.
My research is more accurate than a dozen thoughts in a forum.

All three of my purchases are LG and could not be more happy. Many remarks in here are more about past issues that have been corrected. Our past house we had all Kenmore Elite and Whirlpool. All trouble free for 15 years, except minor repairs done by me, I replaced the ice maker once and an agitator gear once. Total cost of both combined around less then $150
Well Sears is gone from this area, no Kenmores to be found. Whirlpools looked slapped together like one would experience a car decades ago called the "Hugo" not worthy in our new home, god, just horrible the models that we saw. Dried Foam insulation on seams, sharp edges, Cheap rounded edges on others. Cheap interior plastics ...

No doubt about your experiences.

I am thinking of Samsung. I will concede they could have improved in the last year or so, but if I ever and I mean ever buy or bring home a Samsung device, I may be hoping I can find a new bride. And young ones, might be scarce.

*LOL*
My own bias is I will never own a Samsung at least for a decade. Im biased because after our move south over a decade ago I serviced, installed, repaired, Security systems, camera systems, access control systems, Wifi, Limited networks (normally needed help with that) in commercial businesses and homes.
I dont think in my limited experience I had a customer if appliance talk came up that was happy with their Samsung Washer or Dryer.
But I have an open mind as that was long ago, so I dont know but, like everyone, I have my own bias, correct or not.

As far as the bride. Oh man oh man, you need big, big bucks to get a real young one for an old guy *LOL* If you got the money, they arent that scarce. *LOL* Just take your yacht down the intracoastal and head to Miami. They will be jumping into your arms 😃
