Why not more than 1 year?

OK, I see that the 3000 mile OCI is gone the way of the dino(saur). But why, with all the advances in lube technology is one year (regardless of miles) the recommended limit?

Is there some magic breakdown of oil in one year? Miles are no longer the limiting factor...can we start working on an oil that goes 3 years or 30,000 miles as opposed to one that goes 1 year 35,000 miles.

Maybe 1 year, 35,000 or 2 years 18,000 (same oil)

Depends on how you drive during the year.

Short trips and such you need to get the combustion by-products and water out of there. No matter what oil type you are using.

Most people do benefit from changing their oil.

Yeah, but happens if you have only a couple of long trips during the year? Like a recreational weekend driver.

50 miles or so - continuous, every other week - long enough to get up to temp & burn off any nasties. This would still only lead to I know we can do UOA's but it would seem like the oil producers would get more bang for the buck if they had more variable ads on their OCI's

Why stop there ? Why not have an oil that can go 100,000 miles, 1000,000 miles, or an oil that NEVER WEARS OUT ?-!-?

How about an oil that never oxidises, never has its additives depleted, an oil that always has its molecular structure fully intact ?

How about an oil that is so bullet proof, that you could go to an automotive salvage yard, drain the oil out of the junker; and run it ?-!-?

That leaves us with just one remaining question:

How are you going to filter ALL of the dirt out ?-!-?

My point is even if you were to get an oil to last forever, you still can't keep the dirt out of it; and it's dirt that does the most amount of damage to an engine. Sure, a good oil will hold the dirt in suspension minimising its abrasive attack on engine internals, but there's some point where too much dirt is too much.

Air filters and oil filters can stop all but the finest dirt particles from getting in; but in sufficient accumulation, even those small silicon particles will reek havoc on your engine.

I've seen the UOA's with the high Si numbers. Along with those high Si numbers, you'll invariably see all the other numbers go up as well; that's because the engine is getting sanded from the inside out.

There are several limiting factors that limit an OCI, but the one factor I see having the most impact is dirt.

That's why whenever someone asks: "how long can I run my oil?"

I always answer back by asking: "how long can you keep it clean?"

I once purchase a used Ford Falcon with a streight 6 that had never had the oil changed in 8 years. There was not sludge! Just a solid brick of carbon with space for the lifters to move. So you see, you don't really have to change the oil every year.

Any oil sporting GM's Long Life spec (GM-LL-A-025) is rated for 24 months or 18,000 miles for gasoline engines.

The GM Long Life passenger car diesel spec (GM-LL-B-025) is rated for 24 months or 30,000 miles of use.

Yeah, my father's ex-saab 9-3 used M1's 0w-40 which has the LL spec IIRC. The thing is, not all engines take to the same prescription, as well as not having like control/operating outlines/regimens.

They have it,,, lifetime ATF

UOA with TAN, TBN, fuel dilution, coolant and oxidation tests will help one to decide if their engine, driving style, mileage is up to 1 year or longer OCI's.
most top quality mineral and syn. oils off the shelf will easily do a year and more if the engine is operating properly and is not abusively driven.

Honda now specs many of their vehicles for 10k mile OCIs on mineral oil with filter change every 20k under normal op. cond.
