Valvoline R&P Oil Burner Test Results

Unless there is complete blow by occurring, fuel deposits are not getting past two compression rings and halfway down the piston to the oil control rings causing consumption. Fuel quality has actually improved since the 90’s. I remember when Techron was recommended by GM to clean up the poppet injectors. I do run top tier to keep the injectors etc. clean.

I just want the cleanest gas ( for my GDI ) I can get if it’s convenient and the same price.

While I agree it probably doesn’t cause/help piston rings, I think it might help reduce IVDs even though it doesn’t get directly washed by fuel.

I agree for GDI 100%. I only run top tier in my pfi engines but only regular 87.

VRP is tempting me. Waiting on Amsoil SS UOA. With an oil though that can dissolve carbon and keep pistons factory clean, it's hard to ignore. Doesn't meet dexos though, but was told it's more of a licensing issue being they have the EP oil for that.

Thanks Glenda for the update! Looks like VRP has done what it claims!

BTW - I tried it in my daily driver and found a similar affect on the shearing. Noticeable power and noise difference from 0 miles to ~500 miles. But I'm using it not to solve a problem, but just to be one of the cool kids. My DD doesn't have many miles on it but I question the maintenance. Doesn't burn any appreciable oil either.

I'm on the 4th go around of Valvoline R&P in my 2021 Chevy Equinox 1.5T. I began using it around 38K miles and currently have 52300mi on it. Being non-dexos, I've been changing it every 4000-4500 miles. I don't necessarily have concerns of dirty engine internals as the vehicle has records of 5K miles OCIs since day one per CarFax. I bought it used in 2024 w/ 34K miles on it. My main concern is keeping the oil control rings free and clear. So many GDI engine tear-downs you see online these days have stuck oil control rings.

Any issue with oil consumption?

Any issue with oil consumption?

I just did a Buffalo NY to Columbia SC round trip with it last week. About 1600 miles total in that week. Did an oil change when I got back. Used about 0.3 quarts for this ~4300mi OCI. It seems like it used it on the trip back oddly enough as it showed full on the stick when I got there.

How many of you using R&P are seeing improved gas mileage? I had an Mobile 1 0w-20 in a 2020 Sierra with 5.3L L84 getting an average of 15.8 MPG now I am getting 17.4 MPG. Same essential driving routes. No oil consumption issues.

Just passed 5k miles on my 4th and final oci of Valvoline R&P for a total of 20k miles. It’s been hard to keep my mouth shut but here are the details and results!!

2018 Subaru Outback that I bought new. Started burning oil right at about 60k miles. Before that it only used about a 1/4 quart in a 5k mile oci. It started using 1 quart in 5k miles and steadily increased to almost 3 quarts in 5k miles. I was adding a little over a quart every 2k miles when I started this test. I have done every service myself on this vehicle including the pcv valve on time. I’ve only used a couple high quality full synthetic oils at 5k mile oci’s since new. The internals have always been spotless. I used a borescope and found oil wash on 3 pistons confirming my suspicion of stuck low tension oil rings. Here are the oils I’ve used in detail.

500-35k miles M1 FS 0w40
35k-100k miles Valvoline EP 5w30
100k-110k Amsoil SS 5w30
110k-130k Valvoline R&P 5w30

Results with R&P:

1st oci=no change

2nd oci= no change(almost gave up)

3rd oci=added 1/2 qt at 2k miles, 1/2 qt at 4k miles! Used a little over a quart in 5k mile oci.

4th oci=added 1/2 quart at 3k miles and used a total of less than 3/4 quart in 5k mile oci.

So R&P has improved my oil consumption from almost 3 quarts per 5k miles to less than 3/4 quarts in 5k miles. Not 100% but not to shabby if you ask me. I highly recommend people give R&P a try for at least 4 oci’s.

My plan is to run M1 ESP 0w30 for the foreseeable future. I want to see if this oil will keep my piston rings as is. I will continue to update this thread with any changes.
Any pics of cutting open oil filters to see what kind of rocks they collected

My first question would be: what were the temperatures during each of those OCIs? If it was significantly colder during the first run...that's a smoking gun regarding the lower MPG.

"The oil worked great! I still got stuck piston rings with high quality oils. Let me immediately stop using it!"

Why would you stop?? You know the second part of the name is "protect" right?

I expect some hurt feelings. I was always in the 5k on quality oil camp until this car. Really makes me wonder what to do on my next new vehicle as I never want to deal with this again. Boutique? Hoping ESP is the answer.

I would avoid Subaru. Have yet to meet a Subaru owner with a car over 100k miles and they didn't have a jug of oil in the back.

You know I can “restore” it again, right?
I clearly explained my reasons to test another oil.

Absolutely no reason to avoid Subaru. I currently own two and have had at least one in my fleet since the early 80’s. Most taken over 200k miles on just routine maintenance.

My experience:
Purchased a known oil burner - 2008 Scion xB. Discovered that oil consumption is at 1qt/3k miles. Started using VRP 5W-30, and oil consumption is gone in two short (3k) oil changes. Will stick with it for now. But no oil consumption in a 2AZ engine at 228k miles is definitely a WIN in my book.

My son has a 2002 WRX with almost 400,000 km on it and a 98 Forester with over 300,000 km on it and neither of those engines burns a crazy amount of oil. About a half quart every 3-4k. He uses Castrol 5w40 in both.
