Taking some time off

All one has to do is to NOT respond to each and every HF mention. Let some of them go unchallenged.

Not everybody in the world is going to agree or even get along and in fact most of the time we shoot each other over minor and idiotic reasons, it's just a fact of life. I say stick around and say what you want.

The problem is that JMH is not just another BITOG member but also a moderator. Numerous times in the past he was being accused of getting other members banned because of disagreement on this issue or another. And it's really difficult for JMH to prove whether the ban was a result of forum rule violation or just that personal disagreement. Whenever a moderator is also an active poster, it's always difficult to appear objective and separate personal feelings from just "doing a mod's job."

I understand mods have internal rules about how to handle posts/members where a mod is directly intertwined in a discussion, but the enforcement of those rules is not visible to the rest of the members, and that's why accusations start flying.

I personally have nothing against JMH and think he's a valuable member in addition to volunteering as a mod, but I respect his decision.

sorry to hear that you are going to take a break.nothing wrong with being blunt, that is my middle name LOL ! in the long run you need to do what is best for you. I am sure you have some projects that you have been wanting to get to. take the extra time and get out with your wife and enjoy some of things you like to do, she will appreciate the quality time. good luck, hope to see you back here :O)

The political snark really never stops, does it? For every poster who announces he's leaving the forum, I wonder how many just tire of nonstop comments like this and just stop reading an posting?

Or maybe some just appreciate the humor. Lighten up. I mean someone actually did post this as a serious suggestion in the past.

I for one will miss your posts.
There is another mod, whom I shall not name (has a GM diesel and lives in Indiana) who is far more blunt than are you.
You are one of the valued posters on this board, so you will be missed.
Your posts always have a valid point, blunt or not.
Take care, attend to more important things, and enjoy those old 123s and that old e30, as well as that Swedish thing.

I don't think he should totally step back from posting because many of his observation are very good, and frankly I like the directness, sometimes BITOG fourms is just a little to sanitized for its own good, it takes the bite out of a lot of good potential discussions. As long as the comments don't get too personally agressive I see no reason to not let less than diplomatic comments side, we are all adults.

I'd suggest that he remove himself from moderating and simply continue to be a regular posting member.

Maybe, instead, one might suggest that JHZR2 consider taking a leave of absence from his volunteer job and then continue posting. That's more or less what i did at another forum.

I can totally relate to JHZR's situation. I was once very proud and arguably an accomplished Assistant on a great forum. Seeing porn adverts and other nonsense drove me ballistic. I got lots of thanks.

But then my secret identity was leaked -- people found out that the moderator named "Assistant" and "Skate" were one in the same.

Suddenly i was no longer a good assistant but I was a failed leader. I NEVER wanted the words of "skate" to represent the forum's owner -- far the [censored] from it.

And it wasn't an issue of whether or not i could easily crush the argument of my adversary. Rather i just didn't want my opinions causing lots of complaints. Wasn't serving so much of a purpose anymore.

So i just left things in charge of others. Things needed to be done but they didn't necessarily needed to be done by me. They know how to reincarnate "Assistant" when there is anusual problem.

[please forgive the rant

I have never really found your posts annoying. Even when I disagree with them...you post in a manner that really doesn't fan flames. And I can't always say that about me.

Hurry back! This forum can be a little too much PC at times, there are reasons to that, but you are not going to find the wealth of knowledge that is found here any place that I have been to on the Internet. But please hurry back we need more bluntness at times here as long it is not a personal attack.

I can not comment on why other members take break on here from time to time. But after a while of various members asking for advice only not to follow your advice or not able to back there argument with facts or even a plausible "theory" is what turns me off and I find myself taking a nice sabbatical from here.

Pretty much says it. Can't let the [censored] stick to ya, or you get all stunk up!

QP,

He's a moderator so he is mostly above the rules. If a regular poster had bullied like some of his posts were, he would have been banned.

Wouldn't you think that if a moderator was causing too much stir, he would be subject to pressure from other mods and/or board owners to take a step back? I'm just saying that it's a possibility...

"And I don't know who appointed you, skate, the resident expert on every single topic that comes up."
-- my adversary on another forum (before he knew i was the mod)

So obviously i've been accused of posting too much and annoying forum members.

Having said that, i'll kindly ask that you please bear with me.

Hi CivicFan,

I'm also a CivicFan.

Anyways, i really have no idea on whether JHZR2 was a bully, a teddy bear, great mod, bad mod, an ex-con, monk, etc.

But i do know from my own experience of being a mod i felt like i was nowhere near "above the rules." Quite the opposite!

The owner was being pestered with petty complaints about myself -- comments that i NEVER wanted to representative of anything other than me, mysef. The owner was getting complaints about events that NEVER happened!

Instead of helping out i, the assistant, was actually causing more work for the owner.

I modded/adminned a fourm which is dwarfed by this forum. This forum might have approximately 100 times as many members on at any given time (i counted once last night). I can't imagine how many complaints Helen and other mods might get.

I felt as though i could not make a casual post without legal counsel.

Again, that's just me. And also, again, please forgive the venting.
