Question using same filter for 2 oil changes

I use cheapest Fram or ST filters on my kids’ and wife’s cars at 5-7.5 k mile OCI and always change filter and use M1 or ST or Costco/KS synthetic at OEM oil weight recommendation. My DD are a 2017 Z51 Corvette and 2000 S2000. I will drive each 3-4k miles a year and use or will use Fram TG filters probably or maybe UG. I wanted to try changing filter every other OC, so 6-8k miles as a DD over half highway miles. That seem reasonable? If so, main question was when I do the OC, should I remove filter and drain it and reinstall or just leave in place so I don’t disrupt the filter seal and risk a leak? While I don’t care about the extra $8-11 filter cost really, or the extra couple minutes work, waste is waste is waste. It’s either reasonable to do or not. Thanks.

Thanks. Leaving it in place made more sense, but I hadn't previously used a filter for more than one OCI.

If you remove the filter, replace it. You can safely use a filter for 2 oil changes. Honda recommends it and their OEM filters are pretty simple.

Fram Ultra or Endurance oil filter left in place for two 5K to 7.5K mile OCI’s would be easy on a well maintained engine .

If it's easy accessed change it.
I only leave the 4 runner for every other because it's a p.i.t.a. to access,

One thing you might consider is making your coffee with four-fifths tap water and one-fifth water from your toilet bowl.
I don't think my filters hold more than 1/4 quart. For a Z51 that's about 3 % of the 9.5 qt capacity.

It holds about 0.4 quarts.
Good to know. That's 4% then. My youngest child's Pontiac only takes 4 qts with an oil change, and leaving 10% of the oil in that isn't something I'd do for full length oil change.

My 5.3L’s take a full quart if changing the filter. It’s not just the filter can - the ADV is holding the long side of the U-Tube (gallery)

Leave in place.

For me if I’m going to take it off I’ll put a new one on.

As far as the “you need to get all the old oil out” crowd. There is more left in the block than the filter holds…

The idea sounds crazy to me... However my '08 Yamaha Roadliner manual actually calls for oil change every 3k and filter every 6k.

If that is your vision, 100% use the top shelf filter of your choice, don't touch it until your replace it.

Disrupt seal and risk leak? If that’s your concern change the filter .

One thing you’ll notice is that the volume in the filter is not enough to discolour the new oil. That should help with people’s OCD. The other thing is you get to do an oil change just by pulling the plug and draining the oil, and not having to crawl on your back to get the filter. Just one less thing.

Agree with most other posters here. Don’t disrupt the seal - if the filter comes off - replace it. IMO, the “contamination” from used oil in the filter is insignificant and a nonissue.

I don't think that "most" posters here are saying "don't disrupt the seal," which in itself is kind of meaningless. As Kschachn has shown, it is an open issue that folks feel differently about. For me, it is as clear as day that if you are already changing oil, throwing on a filter is a negligible expense and gets that residual oil down to a very low proportion, after the new oil is added. One of the ways that oil ages is that it suspends particles from fuel combustion or the atmosphere or even residue from some oil burning. It also is likely to take a little moisture into emulsion, and these days, some unburnt fuel. I will cede that there is an aesthetic component to my position.

When I said "most posters here" I was referring to this thread. And I agree with them, that pulling the filter off to drain it is unnecessary and in some cases could increase risk of gasket leaks.

Also, what's not an open issue here on BITOG? :)
