I'm currently running with a Fram Ultra filter which is by BITOG standards a great filter and supposed to hold up for quite a few miles, I agree. So my quick question is, when I change the oil in the sump, should I take off and dump what is left in the filter and put it back on or just leave it on and assume that whatever is in it that is loose will be diluted and picked up by the new oil and not worry about it. Also, would any of the MOLY currently in the oil be filtered at all? I want to say I remember someone saying that it's much to small to be filtered and just flows through regardless. Don't break the seal to drain it. You have used oil in your engine. About a quart of it. A few more ounces in the oil filter doesn't make a hill of beans difference. Ok, it makes a tiny difference. Your new TBN will be 8.49 instead of 8.5 had you changed the filter.
Interesting question. It can't hurt to dump another 6-8 oz of dirty oil out of that filter/oil galleries. I'd want to replace the filter 0-ring to ensure a perfect seal. Are those things available separately? I've never re-used an oil filter or had an o-ring needing replacement.
Do not bother draining the oil filter...for two reasons. One, you will break the seal, and it may not properly seal back on. Two, your engine will endure another "dry start" which could be prevented by leaving on the oil filter for multiple OCI's.
Thanks guys. I'll just leave it on. I figured that would be the way to go to protect the filter gasket and also prevent a "cold" start. Love this community!

Can't happen. Lack of an oil pressure reading for an idiot light does not mean lack of lubrication during the start. Your starter might not even be able to budge a dry engine around enough to get it started.
There's plenty of lubrication going on during the start process long before full pressure is ever reached.
Putting oil in a new oil filter for an oil change is a "feel good" step in the process. It's not necessary. For me, I do it every time. I feel better about doing it.

The oil passages that connect to where the oil filter mounts to the engine. Any oil up in the passages above the filter will also drain out when the filter is removed.

I disagree. Take it off, drain it, and put it back on. The more "old" oil you have in your engine, the lower the TBN of the new oil.
There is nothing to be afraid of by taking it off [draining it] and putting it back on again.
More new oil = longer reasonable OCI (oil change interval).
