filter quality is exceptional to most other bargain brands, but oil still creates sludge, not what I expect from full synthetic Mobil 1 oil
Then you need to change the oil more often.
I was just working through some pricier filters, but agree that $2 Super Tech filters should get changed every time.
I just wonder if there is not some way to test your filter without destroying it? What about checking for flow and pressure?
IMO cutting open a filter to look at the inside to see if it is filtering ok is kind of like opening your computer case to see if your computer has a virus.

I open filter's regularly and find engine condition in real time, any engine in new condition wont have any visible metal,sludge at any milage interval using only the best oil and filter's any visible metal and something is making contact inside the engine. lubricant's have to stay a lubricant in severe service, not make sludge or be consumed by the engine or get contaminated in such short order, unless your using certified oil, then it is ok.
if you want to check flow and pressure the gauges on your dash should help you
Oil pressure gages can not check flow, only pressure. If the filter is plugged and in "bypass" you will still show pressure, right?

Depends. You can determine flow ..or rather alterations to flow by your pressure readings ..with a little mojo.
