Using filter longer

How many of you use a filter for the length of the "mileage on the box"? Since Walmart seems to be empty, and I prefer the cheapest filter and change them every time (6-8k miles), how many of you would take, say, a Mobil 1 filter that says 20k miles and run it for 12-15k miles? I'm assuming that's acceptable and will also minimize waste? Or should it be changed every time?

This is something I’m debating right now. I change my oil every 5k on my pre-vcm j35. Not sure if the PG4612EX (rated for 10k) would be ok for two OCIs.

Officially, Honda says to change the filter every other OCI, and until last month, their OEM A02 filter was the Fram PH7317. Before Honda started using the minder, they said 10k OCI but to only replace the filter every other OCI, which would be 20k.

The cheapest filter is fine for the factory spec OCI.

The only time I'd run a really long interval is if the particular filter size is rare/obscure or expensive, then use the longest life filter and use it as long as you can. Also, if you decide to use a filter for more than one OCI, leave it in and do not unscrew it! Once you remove the filter, you must replace it.

If you can get a 7317/4610-sized filter, that would be better, as the shorty 4612 has less media. If you're really lucky, you can get an M1-110A at Walmart. Even though Fram/Champ went bust, the filter size itself is still very common, so no need to use a shorty, which only exists to shade quicky lubes can consolidate filters :sneaky:

The filter mfrs usually say to use the factory spec interval, which for Honda is two OCIs.

It occurs to me that if fuel dilution is your worry with longer OCIs, the filter is not affected by fuel dilution so you might as well run it for two shorter OCIs. I recall other manufacturers besides Honda stating this is OK as well, but don't remember which ones.

I don't claim to be an expert on the subject though and am interested to hear more educated opinions

Like Slacktide said above just get the taller filter with more media.

This below is what they look like with 14k and it obviously could of gone on for a long time it seems.

If I'm using a good filter (and I am) and I know the engine is running well / clean, then I know from experience that the filter can easily go for two years or 2-4 OCI.

Once a year is also a fairly common change interval I see in several service manuals but I know from experience that 2 years is fine.

Thanks fellas. I think Pentius 7317 is the easiest way to get a PGI in that size. I also might run the PG4459EX (9688 equivalent) since it’s even larger and is the same filter I already buy for my girlfriend’s Hyundai. I think bypass specs are the same, just wider than the 7317.

If your engine is pretty clean running, then going 12-15K miles on a filter rated for 20K miles should be OK to do.

Yep, don't disturb the filter seal. Trying to drain the oil in the filter isn't necessary if someone is only doing a 5K OCI anyway.

Change it if esperience shows the filter is likely to catch enough "dirt" to become significantly restrictive before the next oil change. If not, don't change it.

I would take a Mobil 1 oil filter and use it no more than 5000 miles, or any oil filter. I probably change them much less than those miles. I am not rich, but I know oil filters are not high on my list of expenses. One way I save is not drive around to Walmarts and other stores to save $2, when they will ship it free. I don’t know how they do it but I’m not objecting.
