As I understand it, Extended Performance oils are long drain oils. Now, to further muddy the waters so to speak, there is also Valvoline Extended Protection. Is this also an extended drain motor oil? There is also Quaker State Ultimate Protection that advertises 20K mile oil changes, along with Supertech. Then there is Amsoil signature that advertises 25K mile changes, but it's double the price, if not more. Is it really worth the price for an extra five thousand miles?

This thread discusses the differences:

UOAs are your friend here… Some engines might be able to tolerate 10,000 mile plus oil changes (my Toyotas for example), some engines can’t handle over 4,000 (any GDI). The extended drain oils use better base stocks, generally have higher starting & lasting TBN… And generally state “change oil at manufacture’s suggested intervals”… 🤣

Oil at 15,000 miles is going to have twice as much products of combustion suspended in it than at 7,500 miles, which many people suggest as the longest to go between changes if you plan on keeping the vehicle long term. From 15K to 20K I can envision the filter being loaded with dirt and restricting flow or being bypassed altogether. If you only keep the car a few years or are leasing, by all means, 20K OCI is ok for YOU, if approved by the manufacturer.

Boatloads of existing threads for perusal. There are many more:

AMSOIL Signature Series Synthetic Motor Oil is recommended for 25,000 miles or 1 year oil change123. Even if you are a severe service driver, AMSOIL recommends 15,000 miles or 1 year, whichever comes first1. A rule of thumb for AMSOIL Signature Series Synthetic Motor Oil is guaranteed for 25,000 miles/12 months (15,000 miles/12 months in severe service)3.

You have not told us how many miles you drive a year or what Vehicle you are driving now. What is your driving style like, short trips, highway driving?

What's the difference between them?
Antioxidant levels is a big one, along with enough TBN to not allow acids to overwhelm the oil.

As much as this topic is a circular exercise though, if you aren’t familiar with the precautions and actions needed to safely do an extended oil change without putting your equipment at risk, you really shouldn’t do it yet and spend some time reading the threads that @kschachn was kind enough to assemble for you. Happy learning!

Valvoline EP is not an extended oil change interval oil - if just offers extra wear protection versus Valvoline Advanced . At WM you will find Castrol , Mobil 1 and Quaker State extended oil drain interval oils . Most owners manuals state 3,750 miles for severe service , 7,500 miles for normal driving not extending beyond 12 months and some (Toyota) mayrecommend up to 10,000 miles / 12 months as an oil change interval . Most folks here do well by splitting the difference with 5,000 mile / 6 month oil change (which ever comes first) for typical mixed city . highway driving with a D1/Gen 3 rated synthetic oil of your choice at WM on roll back sale . Lastly , when you head above 7,500 mile oil change intervals (unless you are getting oil tests done , are a long time owner of the vehicle knowing it’s condition , etc. the chances of developing dirty engine rings , sludge , etc. tend to go up - so it’s really not worth it . If you have a GDI engine then that advice is doubled and 5,000 mile / 6 month oil max change intervals are your friend .
