What is the best of the best as far as extended drain oils are concerned? I am running a 12,500 mile/6 month oci on my wifes truck right now with Mobil 1 Extended Performance 5w30 and Mobil filter and I am thinking about switching over to AMSOIL Signature Series 0w30 and EAO filter next change. Is there any better oils than AMSOIL Signature Series for long OCI's? I don't care about price, what I do care about is crawling under that truck more than I have too. I would really like to find a 1 year 25,000 oil...Amsoil claims that, however has anyone ever done it with UOA to prove it could go that distance?

I think Lubro-Moly is rated for 20,000 miles, or more? Not exactly sure but I recall someone telling me that when I mentioned I saw it in NAPA. I think Amsoil is rated for 12k miles or more, and Mobil 1 Extended Performance is also. I think it would be a tossup between Mobil 1 Extended Performance and Amsoil.

I'm completely the opposite. Every time I do an oil change on one of my vehicles, I can't wait to do the next one.

i think it depends more on the vehicle than the oil after a certain amount of miles..

some vehicles and engines are better for longer-- extended drains than others.

If there is such an oil, I haven't heard of it. Long drains are an Amsoil specialty, and SSO is their crown jewel PCMO.

Yes, a few times. However, there are a LOT of variables that play into it (sump size, driving style, etc.), so there's nothing to say for sure whether it'll work the same way in your engine with your driving.

IMO, run it for 10,000 miles, pull a sample for a used oil analysis, top your engine of, see how the report looks, and go from there.

I already got my collection kit from blackstone and am going to see how well the Mobil 1 Extended Performance looks after a 12.5k run...I would think SSO would do better, so it would seem 10k used oil analysis would kinda be pointless. I think I might try 15k used oil analysis on the SSO just to see if it will have the moxy to go another 10k. The truck runs great, burns no oil in 5k OCI, everything is very well maintained. Mater of fact running 5k OCI's the oil was still golden brown.

Last big run here was 55k km's with Esso XD-3 0w30 full synthetic oil. That's ~= 35k miles.

I'm roughly 10k into my next run on the oil.

I would say Supertech conventional 5w20 could get you a good 1-2k...just kidding. I would have to agree with the Amsoil if you are looking for ridiculous OCI's but I sorta like changing the oil more regularly than that and go with PP.

I use the 5-30 EP in both Fords and it seems to work well. Last Jan. I did a used oil analysis on the Focus with nearly 10,000 miles and the oil was still fine. TBN was 3.3 and the Vis was right where it should be. No shearing at all or oxidation. Could have gone much longer.

That service length, like most Euro-oils, is where specified by the OEM. It's not applicable ..as in "a given", outside of those confines. The OEM has detailed what is required to make that extended OCI in that chassis ..and the blender has complied. I also have a feeling that those numbers were in km's with probably a 1 year to 18month OCI.

This is a divide that we see quite often. Once you set foot in Europe ..a whole different set of rules apply.

Except for the XL and the racing oils, all of them are rated for ONE YEAR and up to 25k (35k for the SSO) under normal service and 15k (17k for SSO) or ONE YEAR ..whichever occurs first.

That, for the vast majority of users, means ONE YEAR under all service conditions.

The truck is a 2000 Bravada with 4.3 vortec...is that a known sludger? I already know about the dexcool and gasket issues and have addressed both of those problems before they even became a problem.

Well keep in mind AMsoil markets itself as a long drain oil and has never really deviated from that. Mobil 1 used to claim 25,000 mile oci back when it first came out that was int he 5W20 days back when 20W20 and SAE 20 where common. In fact off and on Mobil claimed that and prior to the SM GF-3 debacle that kicked the teeth of all synthetics in and Mobil brought out their M!EP sereis it was fairly common for people to do 15K-20K mile OCI it was just the new kids to synthetic that did not grow up with that idea that reallyhad a hard time with it. In fact some people on this site ran M1 and Amsoil head to head in LS1 for I think 20K miles and did all kinds of UOA along the way. Yes Amsoil did produce better wear numbers over the long hall but it also thickened more too though if I recall properly. In the end one would have been hard pressed to see any real world difference.

The reason S3K HD 5W30 does so well is because it is not an SM GF-3/4 oil if it was it would be gone in 1/2 that time!

I know a guy who has a 99 Silverado with 260,000 miles and uses Mobil 1 5w30. What's interesting about this is that he will only change oil when he has absolutly nothing better to do. I saw him yesterday and he said he last changed oil last year with no filter change in between. He said he knows this OC has over 20,000 miles, maybe 25,000. He did say he plans to change soon before colder weather comes in. The Chevy still sounds great with no lifter noise, and this is with regular M1. Now no UOA has been done and if was it would probably would look bad. The oil consumption isn't bad at all, but he only adds when the low oil level light comes on. He's on his third transmission, you guested it, but doesn't change transmission fluid either, so could all of us here at BITOG be just a little to fussey about OCIs?
