the car just hit 160,000. i drive about 300 miles per week. i've always used conventional and would like to use a synthetic. i'd like to extend the OCI to 9,000-12,000. i was thinking of going with one of the following, which would be best:

1-Castrol Edge Titanium and PureOne Filter
2-Mobil 1 Extended Performance and Mobil 1 filter
3-AMSOIL Signature Series and Filter

my guess is that it's not worth the extra money for Amsoil considering the age/mileage on the car.

Thanks for your help!

I vote Mobil 1 Extended Performance because it's more available/cheaper than Amsoil and retains viscosity better than Edge, assuming that you're going to use 5w30. And don't forget to use a quality filter for that extended OCI.

thanks, that was kinda my thoughts. 5qt jug of Mobil 1 Extended Performance can be found for around $27. and i'd go with the Extended Performance Mobil 1 filter.

I run AFE in my 1995 GT 3100 since 80k it now has 200k i do 7-10k OCI and it's running like new and clean inside, the 31-3400's are easy on any oil and the Castrol Edge and PureOne should do nicly at 10K OCI or more.

Is use Mobil 1 but I wouldnt extend it for that long. Id go 7500 at the most. I'm one of those people who thinks its insane to go longer . And I don't care what science says because when a car gets older you should change the oil more often that way you have a good excuse to check other stuff . Suspension , seals , hoses , ect... But i am sticking with Mobil High Mileage and changing it every 3000 . I'm sure plenty will disagree with me but changing your oil more often than absolutely necessary never hurt an engine. But waiting to long has hurt plenty

you could just use Mobil super its 3.50 a quart where I am and change it every 5,000 and it would cost the same as changing it with Mobil 1 every 10k and you get two oil changes and cleaner oil and filter and the satisfaction of checking other stuff while your under there.

Why wow? I drive a Saturn and the manual recommends 3000 if I live it dusty climate lots of short trips ect. I do a lot of short trips live on a gravel road and saturns are hard on oil. So I change it at 3000 it has 193k and the motor is perfect I want it to make 500k. If I had a car that was easier on oil and didn't do as many short trips id go 5000 but really even with a synthetic going 7500 makes me cringe I know its fine in most cases but I don't see it a good idea doing a 12000 oci on a car that's 13 yrs old. Nor do i see a reason to switch to synthetic after 13 yrs of conventional. If it was a new car with less miles I'd say go synthetic but those v6's will live a long healthy life on conventional and they have a tendency to leak and we all know the synthetic cleans the crud and then the seals start leaking . It does happen from time to time. All I'm saying is that older cars are kept because they are cheaper than a car payment. So why not just use decent conventional change it 3000-5000 and be done. No sense spending s of money on oil and a filter It just isn't necessary for the application. save the money you will save by buying regular oil and put it in an account that way when the car needs repaired you'll have an account set up for it. 160k anything could go out tierods head gasket intake gasket , transmission, ac, water pump anything. So id save the money and put it towards a rainy day fund.

thanks for all the tips and info. i'm definitely leaning towards the Mobil 1 Extended Performance. how would Pennzoil Platinum and a PureOne filter stack up to the Mobil 1 Extended Performance?

I like my choice....

4- Pennzoil conventional and Purolator Classic filter

thanks for the tips and advice. i think i'm gonna settle with Mobil 1 High Mileage and their EP filter. gonna start with 6000 mile OCI and see how that treats me.

I have a 2001 Grand am GT and use the Mobil 1 Extended Performance and the filter. I change my oil once a year regardless of how many miles I drive but it tends to be under 12k miles per year.
