New RAV4 Immediate 2000 Mile Trip

(re-thinking this.....
I would not have pulled that factory-loaded with goodies oil until 3k. If that meant packing my own five quarts for the trip and having a lube shop change the oil during the trip, then that's how I would have handled it.

I have a new 24 RAV4 and I changed my oil at 500 miles and was glad I did because I saw a lot of sparkly stuff floating around. I did another change at 2,000 miles. I now have 3,000 miles on the clock with fresh oil and I can feel engine pulling much stronger so it is definitely breaking in. Getting ready to go on a 1000 Mile Road Trip this month.

What oil and viscosity are you using in your Rav4?

I'm getting a RAV4 LE at the beginning of August and will immediately have to drive it from NC to ND. I'll have one day in NC after taking delivery that I'll be visiting family and plan to tool around neighborhoods and a few highways for probably 3-4 hours to try and hit 100 miles with speeds between 25-55. Next day, on leaving, I'll probably take state highways and some US highways.

Knoxville TN will be right around 500 miles and I plan on getting an oil change. I've already ordered Toyota 0W-16 and filters in case dealers or lube centers are out of stock.

Given I'll have to cross some mountains at some point, I'm wondering if a 1000 mile or 1500 mile change would be warranted, or should I just push into ND and change it on arrival?

I'm avoiding West Virginia and taking I40 to avoid the steeper mountains on I77 and US35.

Any tips? Changes you'd recommend? Different oil? 0W20 instead? Drive it in reverse?
Break in during first initial X miles, you're suppossed to drive gently at moderate speeds for most cars to give the manufactured engine parts time to wear to the right clearances. You might want to check the owners manual to see what that max moderate speed is during engine break in. It could be 55 MPH max. Check the owners manual.

Thats not even close to breaking in yet. Wait till you get after 10K on it. I can feel the difference now with 15K on my Rav4 Hybrid in signature. Congrats on your purchase and hope it treats you well for many years to come.

I changed the oil at 167 miles, around 1700 and again just now at around 3800. Will be dropping some of the highest end HPL in soon. Not due to mileage but the fact it will be -40 sometimes soon.

I installed a Kat's 150W heater on the oil pan and at home the car is in an unattached/uninsulated garage but plugged in.

If we had access to plugs at work I'd install a block heater too but we don't and I'm at work 17+ hours some days or even leave the car there on multi day trips.

I changed the oil & filter in my 2024 Rav4 at 500 miles, and again at 5000 miles using PP 0W-20 with a new OEM Toyota filter for both. I'll be taking it to the dealer for the 10K mile Toyota care oil change soon and I'm thinking of running the free dealer oil & filter change (0W-16) through the winter and change it out at 15K miles with PP 0W-20.

On my 2019 4Runner, I did spill & fill on the 5's and both oil & filter change on the 10's for the 50K miles I owned it. It's still running fine at over 80K with the new owner who is now going by the maintenance minder for 10K oil change intervals at quick lube shops.
