following the owner's manual for severe service, regardless of your driving habits, would be a good place to start - the engineers who designed the engine know what it needs. This would be safe to do.

The style of your original post caused the tone of the responses. It was assertive, almost defiant. There was no outright question, no request for opinions or comments, no hint of uncertainty even. With none of those present, there seemed to be no reason for the post to have been made in the first place, except to cause the reactions which you in fact received.

Now that we have gotten that out of the way, is there something we can help you with? We are not actually a rude or unreceptive group, but your post really was quite "out there".

Yes thanks. I really just want to learn more about oil, and how to use engine oil to get the longest life out of my engine. I drive a 207 Toyota Yaris and switched to Mobil 1 oil and filters after the first two or so oil changes.

mobil 1 and 5,000 is a good starting point. I run it in 3 different vehicles, they range from 6,000,8,000 and 10,000. used oil analysis is the key here to knowing how long your oil can really go.......thanks for being open to learning more about oil and how to make it work efficiently for you.....

Welcome aboard, and please forgive the initial misunderstanding. It is natural that you would want to preserve your car. But as others have said, there are plenty of reports here of vehicles wearing out the bodies long before the engines simply by adhering to the maker's recommendations.

There are some vehicles which are special cases, and need to be treated differenty, due to bad engine designs, sometimes coupled with suboptimal driving patterns. In general though, you are more likely to have engine problems from a non-oil related cause, like an internal water leak, which can be detected by oil analysis. So the first recommendation is of course to run the oil longer, but save the money for an occasional UOA (used oil analysis).

Many here (myself included) have used Blackstone Labs (a site sponsor). A google search for "blackstone labs" should reveal their website, which has instructions for getting an analysis.

Take it easy on the guy. It's a happy ending.

I like Mobil's lube filters, and I think M1 gets on well with Toyota engines. Other than that, make sure your oil level is between the MAX and FILL lines on your dipstick and dump it before it's played out. Keep fluid levels at acceptable levels at all times. Don't skip scheduled maintenance like tranny fluid changes, filter changes, etc. Follow the manufacturer's maintenance requirements while you're under warranty, and keep all receipts and a log book of your DIY work so that you're okay in the event of a warranty claim. If/when problems develop, solve them rather than hoping for the best. Don't beat on your car, either.

That's about it. Have fun.

Some people like changing oil. I shure do. That's what dino oil is for. What would you say to see lower wear rates on oil that costs 1/3 the price? It's a fact. How about 10k miles on $2 dino that the lab calls "fit for further service". That's what cars like Honda spec for normal service, 10k on dino oil, 20k on the filters. I usually change 5000-6000 but have gone as long as 11k a few times on GC.

Some people have cars that are difficult to service or they don't know how. Those people should use synth oil and use it for the only thing it's good for other than cold cranking, extended changes. Those people have complicated under belly pans on the car which need to be removed or other servicing issues. For sure, 10k on synth in a non-turbo is fine.

Here's a pic from a member's engine after 122k of 10k changes on Syntec....I'm asking what would be gained by doing 120 oil changes on this car vs 12?

"Engine wear actually decreases as oil ages. This has also been substantiated in testing conducted by Ford Motor Co. and ConocoPhillips, and reported in SAE Technical Paper 2003-01-3119. What this means is that compulsive oil changers are actually causing more engine wear than the people who let their engine's oil get some age on it. "

There's your answer.

Not really.

That test didn't take place on a complete engine, IIRC. So it doesn't take into account blowby and other contaminants, so it really isn't applicable to the real world.

I've never heard of anyone doing 1000 miles oil changes. It's ironic because there's people who don't change their oil at all and their Toyota goes 300k miles.

How about your Tranny, Diff, PS Fluid....? How frequently do you change those...??
