Oil for slightly neglected ford explorer 4L sohc

The ignition system on your 4.0 is a waste spark (1 coil pack for all 6 cylinders). Keep an eye on plug life span even with the iridiums, as one bank will eat the ground strap. Both the ground strap and center electrode need to be either platinum or iridium. I have found the (cough) Autolite double platinums actually have the best life in a Ford waste spark setup. My Ranger has at least 80k on the double platinums and still have plenty of life on them.

Wow just like the last one I had in the 1990s.

Anti sway bushings in less than 10k miles.

Maybe it's bent or the linkable setghat came with the truck just suck that bad. I'm going to put some energy sus bushings on there. Should last a bit longer.

Mystery solved. I thought maybe I have a bent anti sway bar or if the links were a little longer the bushings wouldn't blow out like that. So I took one of the fronts to O'Rileys and they had the correct ones in stock and the correct ones are an inch longer then what was on there. At some point someone put "ford" branded rear anti sway bar links on the front.
The truck came with 2 new sets of anti sway bar link kits.
Since I didn't know which set was which I just made sure what was going on matched what was coming off.
Then I noticed after I put the rear set on both front and rear appeared to be the same length.... Didn't think anything of it till I was rotating tires today and noticed both sides were blown out.
Maybe this is a common thing?

Oh yeah and he's got a brand-new looking Craftsman 48 inch riding mower with 24hp Briggs engine with 202 hours on it with a burned up engine because he didn't change the oil.
He's your BIL right?

This should have been sorted by a brotherly conversation with your dear sister, before he became your brother in law. Too late now. Best to keep working on the truck.

That's interesting.

The truck I bought had completely cut sway bar links on both sides, which I thought was pretty odd. Seems hard to do.

People do this as an off road thing. First heard about the "jeep people" doing this. Why I do not know.
Normal people just remove one linkage set off one side or the other. Then reinstall the removed linkage before driving on the highway so you don't flip the vehicle avoiding a pothole or some dropped object, deer, ect on the road.

Interesting. Yes I've heard that people remove the sway bar for offroading but cut sway bar links was a new one for me. Even the shop where I had the work done didn't mention that. They even do a lot of custom offroading stuff. Fortunately they were pretty cheap and only half an hour of labor. They said they've never seen it before.

I've only got 3,500 on this OCI but I think I'm going to change it. It's supposed to be 75f here tomorrow. If I wait till 4,000 it will be cold af. If I wait till 5k, it will be warmer but more like to be raining or trying to snow while raining.
We've already had thunder sleet. Last time I saw thunder sleet it was an epic winter.
3500mi oil will make for some high quality reclaim oil.
Probably rerun the oil filter again.

Appreciate the updates. I've enjoyed following this thread. Hope you can make this thing go the distance.

You have Valvoline Restore and Protect in there now?

Yeah it's got Valvoline Restore and Protect now. Probably switch to 10w-30 Pennzoil Platinum since that's what I have.

This one's been cooking for a bit.
11,000 over 3 oil changes. Distributed approximately 3,000mi, then 3,500mi and last 4,500mi. Using Valvoline Restore and Protect 5w30.
Oil filter is a wix wl10058. Still remarkably clean and in great condition.
I'm going to say this engine is cleaned out.
About 75% of that oil will continued on as reclaim oil in junk mowers and as bar and chain oil.

I've got a fe2 oil filter on there. Probably run it for 2 changes with Pennzoil Platinum. I put Pennzoil Platinum 10w-30 as that's what I had on hand.
I'll cut open the FE2 after let's say 10,000mi and two even 5,000mi oil changes.

Yeah I think it's still cleaning up too. How does it look through the oil fill hole?

Burning any oil?

I was actually thinking about this thread a few days ago and wondering how the ol' "Exploder" was doing.

I don't think it burns much. It definitely leaks some. I haven't looked down in the fill tube yet. I suppose I could.
