Yeah, usually they don't make it to the auction with them though. So then you have to hunt down the correct parts. I had to get the parts to get the doors working on my 2002 from 3 different dealers because they had all been obsoleted in Fords system. So I had to find the NOS parts.
The other option is of course, junkyard.

The hardware isn't in the trunk, that's for sure. I will probably take you up on this. (I think the hardware is the same, 1998-2011.)

For this, do the rear doors have to be working in order to pass state inspection? I'm not 100% clear, but my understanding is that doors and class actually have to be functional.

I suspect most won't, you're right.
But I know one of my coworkers failed for it, 10-15 years ago. I looked a few minutes ago at the statute, and IMO it's ambiguous on that detail.
But odds are, as long as you go someplace reputable, you'll be fine. Heck, you could point to the former life of the car, and and insist "they're all like that, from the factory". My coworker probably went to a VIP or similar and maybe it was a slow day for them.

I'd say the person you talked to would be correct. Up here (and our Vehicle Equipment Regulations aren't that different), there are certain exemptions for police equipment (i.e. I can't have red and blue flashing lights on my privately owned F-150), but I don't ever recall seeing there being an explicit exemption for the rear doors for a police vehicle versus a private vehicle. For a conversion of a CVPI to a taxi, the rear doors would have to be functional, but there are different equipment regulations for taxis here than there are for private vehicle and police vehicles, after all.
Soon after I learned auto repair, I learned quickly that few cars are as tough as a Crown Vic.

When I was a deputy, all I did was run around town serving warrants and picking up prisoners. Pretty easy miles. I drove my county car the same way I drive my own. Like a granny. You probably will get decent service out of that.
