Man, it’s been a minute. Shoutout to all the OG’s on here that allowed me to make informed decisions in the past while I lurked in the backgrounds trying to learn.

I’ve had my gen 1 B58 car for almost 7 years now. She’s had Castrol since the second oil change interval. Did a few UOA’s and all seemed well around the 40-50k mile range. I went into auto drive and having bought in bulk, have continued to use Castrol 0w40 first with and then without the LL01 certification till now. The motor has seen quite a bit the last few years, and has gone through some stages of additional boost and has never skipped a beat! I haven’t done a UOA, but have come to wonder if with age…maybe a change needs to be made. Car has had a hybrid turbo with fueling support modifications since 32k. With that being said, I’m currently having some motor issues and have come to wonder if the Castrol non-LL01 certification had something to do with the life of this motor. Car is running an ethanol blend (E55), and has seen 5k OCI its entire life. Is it time to make a change in oil? Wish I had a UOA to provide more insight, but I do not. Just looking for recommendations. I know that Castrol has now added the LL01 certification back in the new formulation.

For those wondering, I’ve been seeing a good amount of carbon bits at the bottom of my oil drain pan; the image below is an accumulation over several OCIs. There are several pieces of metal, in which I confirmed with a magnet. Im also chasing some white smoke (coolant?) that appears and disappears in some 15 seconds as the car is coming to normal operating temp. Will be looking at internals this coming weekend.

Thanks! :)

Lack of certification does not have anything to do with it.
The reason why 0W40 did not have LL01 for some time was 2020 LL01 update where it eliminated 0WXX oils from LL01 and LL04 line up due to oxidation levels which prevented it from running long OCI. Your OCI was short.
However, you are running E55. That might have something to do with it. It might be thinning oil too much. You should do UOA to see where your KV100 is. But IMO, 5W50 is more suitable for E55 than fairly thin 0W40 for that set up.

i must have read it a 1000 times from you,lol..i think this explanation must be sticky on this section of euro oils and import oils ,i guess there are a lot of bmw owners.
something like...
bmw owners and ll01 approval ,why it was lost in 0-w oils before 2020 and now is back on again

Would have been best to do UOA when adding boost and fuel twice (E85).
Time for APR bolts maybe, hopefully nothing is cracked.

HPL/AMS 5W40+ Time maybe?
