Curious if anyone on this forum as any experience with amsoil euro 0w40? I live in Canada and have been using castrol 0w40 in cooler weather and motul xcess gen2 in warmer weather. In my area I can now only get castrol 0w40 SP and the specs/make up do not appear to be as good as what the SN version was. Did some research and came across amsoil 0w40. My car is out of warranty and so builder approvals don't concern me as much as knowing the oil is of good quality. I know amsoil lacks when it comes to builder approvals. What I found intriguing about amsoil 0w40 was that in many ways it is similar to castrol 0w40 SN. 25-50% pao, good pour point, HTHS of 3.7, KV100 13.3. All good specs imo. The noack is on the higher side and I do drive a mk7 golf R stage 2, however, I clean my intake valves every 25-30k km. Anywho, just curious if there is any experience out there with this oil. thx in advance.
I also considered castrol 0w30 but my tuner recommends I stick to 40wt.

I came across this uoa of amsoil 0w40 euro, only one I can find. Numbers look okay at least for this engine which was also a golf r.

Grade is unimportant. HT/HS is the relevant characteristic as you note, the tuner should know this. If it isn’t reported then go by what a listed approval requires.

That $30 spectrographic analysis is pretty useless when trying to determine relative oil quality between the oils you’re considering. Any Euro oil will be fine in this application, use the Amsoil if you wish. It is very good oil.

Thx appreciate the feedback and advice. On paper the amsoil 0w40 looks good just couldn't find much about it for reviews in my searches. As you mention I'm sure any euro oil would work well. My only options without having to order are your Canadian tire/Walmart options and a local tuner sells motul/amsoil. My draw to amsoil was the use of a greater % of pao similar to what I was getting with Castrol. Just harder to obtain now unfortunately.

Not that it matters, but Mobil 1 FS 0W-40 is 25-50% PAO according to the SDS:

I personally think Amsoil SS 0w40 is better than their Euro version.

Been on BITOG too long because that add package looks like a current formulation for a Euro type oil.

Nothing against Mobil and I'm sure it's a fine oil. The slightly higher hths of Castrol led me to use it. Now that sp is my only choice hence amsoil which too has a slightly higher hths than Mobil. I couldn't find much on the amsoil so thought I would inquire with this group. Thx

AFAIK, Mobil doesn't publish the HTHS of the FS 0W-40 at present. It's probably 3.6-3.7.

I'm running @High Performance Lubricants Super Car 0W-40 in my SRT, which has an HTHS of 3.875cP.

My issue with SS 0W-40 in a Euro application is that Amsoil does not claim that it meets or is suitable for ACEA A3/B3/B4 or any of the Euro automaker approvals.
Yeah that is a valid point. There are some viscosity differences in some of the grades for example 5w30 SS/AEL. SS has a lower HT/HS so I wouldn't use that in a Euro application. I guess I'd only consider the 0w40 SS if I was out of warranty just to try it.

This set of UOAs looks like an old formula...... SJ era perhaps.
Pablo could nail down it's born-on-date much better than I.
I don't put to much onus into those reports. For me I'm just trying to figure out if amsoil is a good choice for my case. Nothing against other euro oils, amsoil just happens to be readily accessible for me and at a very good price point.

Being where you live in Ontario and use Supercar 0w40, , I suspect you have that SRT garage-kept and might even own an engine heater. Perhaps consider starting a thread someday on recommendations for such.
Happy Holidays ahead and your contributions here are over-the-top enormous.
