I just did the 3rd oil change on my 2023 GMC Sierra 1500 with the 2.7 "TurboMax" engine. Absolutely no problems with the truck but I for some reason decided to use Valvoline Restore & Protect 5w30.

After the factory fill was out the 1st oil change was a dealer freebee and the 2nd one was Quaker State Full Synthetic that I had previously selected to run also in my 2024 Ford Transit 250.

For the first 9,000 miles of the trucks life on generic dexos and the QS, the truck met the advertised 18/20/19 mpg on the Maroney sticker, but in the first few hundred miles running the Valvoline Restore and Protect the mpg has jumped on average 2mpg.

I have never ever experienced a mpg jump just due to oil brand change so this is weird.

My plan of action is to run 3,000 miles and then do a change to Valvoline Advanced FS to see if the mileage drops back to what it was doing on the generic oil. Also I realize that the Restore and Protect is not dexos certified but i'm not worried about it and honestly this was just sticking my toe in the water to try the oil. Was probably just going to go back to Valvoline Advanced or Pennzoil Platinum after the experiment anyway.

Smoother engine and improved MPG is something we hear from quite a few users of Restore and Protect. I've noticed both myself.

MPG isn't night and day for me, but I noticed it.

Maybe down the road Valvoline will have a dexos version and you can go back to it!
I agree.

I have to put some more mileage on the oil and see if the increased fuel economy I am seeing keeps up, or if it drops back down to it's average. This is quite easy for me personally as the truck sees a 100% mix of country back road and highway driving with no city whatsoever.

At $6 a jug more then PP it is pricey but if the increased mpg holds might be worth it, not sure yet.

Keep us informed.

You have Fuel Savings, which is good, this oil from Valvoline is called Restore and Protect, so something is happening.

I will say this, if for some reason, a certain oil gave me better gas mileage than the other oil I was using, I know what oil I would be using.

I just reached 500 miles on the oil and so far maintaining the increased FE. Have hand calculated the mileage to verify and yes getting about 2mpg better over AC Delco and QS oil.

Yes something is happening but I need to test with standard Valvoline FS and PP to see if this maintains. Maybe AC Delco which is most likely Mobil isn't as good idk?

Even if that oil isn't giving the same protection? Fuel economy isn't the only
consideration, at least for myself.

Care to share what protection you believe that Valvoline R&P isn't providing that either the factory fill, the dealer freebie oil, or the Quaker State Full Synthetic do provide?

FWIW I have been doing a 3k oci so as the owner I'm not horribly worried about any brand lubricant. I am curious why Valvoline didn't bother to get Dexos certification but PENNZOIL didn't bother with PUP so who knows?

Seriously? I never mentioned any brand names.I simply said in general that I prefer wear protection over gas mileage . You read too much into it, seemed a little defensive actually.

Just wanted to share an update from today.

Traveled from my house to Tannersville PA about 100 miles mostly uphill and averaged 21.4 mpg hand calculated.

Then traveled another 175 miles from Tannersville PA to Atlantic City NJ about half downhill and half completely flat at sea level and averaged 26.5 mpg. Hand calculated

This is really amazing and makes me glad my truck is capable of crushing EPA estimates.

GMC trucks are known to

Valvoline is known to run well in GM engines. I have a ‘22 like yours that has run up 110,000 miles. I used QS Ultimate Durability until about 75,000 miles, and never used an ounce of oil in 7,500 OCI. Then, I switched to Amsoil SS for 3 oil changes and use 1 quart between oil changes. May go back to QS. I’ll probably be blasted by psychotic Amsoil lovers, but I have used it for 31 years and it was problematic in my Tacoma (foaming) and Sierra (burned off).
