Hello all - thinking about switching up the grade of oil I’ve been using in my truck & figured I’d see if I’m barking up the right tree. Here are the pertinent details:
  • 2020 GMC Sierra AT4
  • 6.2L gas engine
  • 118,000 miles
  • Drive roughly 30k-35k miles/year
  • Roughly 2/3 of those miles are highway/freeway
  • Live in DFW, so have to deal with the blast furnace heat for about 5-6 months out of the year
  • OCIs usually following the OLM, so roughly every 7,500 miles - probably about to change that to an OCI between 5k and 6k miles
I’ve been using 0W-20 since that’s what the manual calls for, and hadn’t ever really thought about changing it until doing some reading on here. Now I’m thinking about jumping up to a 5W-30 at minimum, but am also intrigued by the Euro oils in 0W-40 or 5W-40. Am I on the right track here?

most any name brand synthetic 5w-30 and good filter would be fine at proper 5k ,6 mo. oci or even Amsoil at a extended oci. does the engine consume any oil ? , if so try the Valvoline R&P 5w-30.

It does, about a quart per OCI - I’ll probably throw in some VRP for a few OCIs & see if that takes care of the consumption issue

I've been using 0/5w-40 in my 6.2 2021 by the 14k mark and I'm still under factory warranty today. Burns way less and it's dead silent at hot idle and I've lost perhaps 0.1 maybe 0.2 mpg tank average but there's too much margin of error in measuring and driving conditions so maybe it's less than 0.1. Definitely switch away from that 0w-20.

I was hoping someone with the same engine would chime in, thanks!

Mine went from burning over 2 quarts and triggering the low oil level message by 4-5k miles into the interval to now burning just over a quart within that same mileage and never triggering the message again. Don't need to top up during the interval. If you're doing that many miles a year being mostly highway 7500 miles isn't extended for it. Quaker State euro 5w-40 is just $23 a jug but you have to order it at walmart.com but shipping is fast and free with $35+ orders.

I have a 7,000 mi GMC 2024 Yukon with the 6.2 L engine. Before I have had a Lincoln Navigator and multiple Ford Expeditions. None ever had to be topped up between oil changes but: the Navigator was a half quart low at the 1,000 mi mark using a 5 grade oil. I have used 20 and 16 grade oils. No issues here in Florida on the warm coast of the Gulf of America.

I run 5W30 in the older Tahoe and 0w20 in the newer. They are 5.3’s
Neither consume oil and they run quietly …
