On my wifes 2005 Impala 3.4L, I get a slight tick for the first 15 or so seconds on start-up. I've been using High-mileage oil every 4k miles and either a wix or non-ecore acdelco filter.

Is this normal or should I be looking for a bigger issue?

I have issues with Wix filters and start-up tick on my Altima, the only filter and I don't understand it. I would try a M1 oil filter they flow well, if you have a tick with those it is something else.

If it's doing it just recently I'd suspect a bad ADBV (anti-drainback valve). Try changing the filter and see if it corrects the problem.

Try a P1 filter and see if the anti-drainback valve works better for your model. Keep an eye on the coolant reservoir to be sure intake gaskets do not fail and contaminate the oil.

You may have one lifter that is slightly weak(bleads off some oil while the engnine is off) compared to the others. That meens nothing as for engine damage.

I`m sure alot of yall will think this is strange, but Fram TG`s gave me the most instant, highest, and consistent oil pressure. Where`s the filter located on your car?

I hear alot of 3.1/3.4 ticking almost all the time wheather it be in a Impala, Malibu(previous gen), Venture and other GM's with these two engines(GrandAm/GrandPrix). I have even heard/listen to a 3.8L GrandPrix SC ticking.

These engines seemed louder apon cold start up and then quieting down to just a mild ticking. Doesn't seem to be an issue as I have seen these engines tick themselves all the way to & above 200K miles with little trouble except their gaskets. And some never had the gasket issue.

My SIL/BIL in LasVagas had a '99 Venture minivan from new with the 3.4L and never an issue of any kind with over 200K. And it's hot in LV!

Lots of folks in our circle seemed to love the Chevy Venture/Pont TranSport/Olds Silouete minivans all w/3.4L and never an issue with the engins although they all ticked at some point in their life, some worst than others. And some folks did replace their known IMG/HG. Otherwise, they're good to go!

I loved these GM V6's as I think that they made great torque, decent HP and very good MPG.

Could it be a high idle exhaust tick?
My friend just bought a Ford Escape and noticed a tick at startup which he thought was oil. It was a cracked exhast manifold and only making noise at high idle for the first few seconds until the idle slowed.

Try a good premium oil filter first.
But there may be a lifer that leaks down a bit too fast. Engines often stop at the same spot., and it may be pushing that lifter down, and expelling oil.
