Increase valve train noise

up its good oil, one of the better ones on the market and affordable.
Purchased 2 5 quart jugs . 1 was 0w-20 and 5w-20 with the $20 rebate ( 2 5 qt. jugs or 10 qts. ) that just ended . Also had $10 from A.A.P. with 2 5 quart jugs of the ULTRA with 2 CARQUEST Premium oil filters . Think it was under $5 a quart with the rebate and the low price on the oil and filter special . Can't beat that .

I prefer Valvoline Maxlife High Mileage (HM) 5w30 over Pennzoil HM 5w30 or Mobil One HM 5w30 because Valvoline is thicker at full op temp.

I compared the viscosity specs.

Valve noise in a Jeep 4L with Mobil One motivated me to compare specs. My Buick Park Ave 3800 is too quiet for me to hear any differences between oils, but my Buick has a slight oil leak. So I prefer a slightly thicker HM oil for my Buick too. My theory is that thicker oil will leak less.

I'm 5'10" 150 lb, you?

6'1". 163 lb dripping wet.

Lots of people think a heavier weight oil will quiet valve train noise. So will a heavy blanket over your engine.

You may be right. My wife frequently assures me that I don't know everything. :)

So I changed the oil in this truck in April. Put in QS 10w30 full synthetic. Today in a drive thru I happened to remember to listen for any change in sound. Anyway the valve train noise was reduced to a whisper except one noticable tapping that I guess had been masked by the rest of the noise before. Increasing RPM by 4 or 5 hundred silenced that. I may try 5w30 and see what that does. Just saying to anyone who might be interested. I appreciate all y'all.

A little story on how noise works: years ago I bought an entry level Canyon 4 door. Lots of road noise. So I started putting Dyna mat in the front doors - now what’s this new noise. Need some under carpet. What’s that new sound now? Need some in rear doors - now, behind the rear seat and so on … Even, repeated this cycle with CCF …
Same under a hood - make any sound change and something else will be heard …
Have a 2012 base model Canyon. Michelin Defenders quieted that thing down quite a bit. That said, Delo 400 XSP 5W-40 has been the quietest oil in that little 2.9 than anything else. Had just used it as it was cheap & I'm hunting down a silicon issue on it. Since it's going to my 16yr old it'll likely stay on the stockpile of Delo until he moves out. FWIW, PUP was the noisiest oil used in the Canyon but I still used it for nearly 30k miles of 5k OCI's.

OP, most of us have great UOA's on different oils that were both noisy & quiet. If the PP performs well, keep using it. If the QS performs just as well but you prefer the quieter valvetrain, then just switch back. INBD.

Living in south GA you’re probably fine with 5w30 instead year round. I doubt the winter rating would change noise at a drive thru; especially in the warmer weather we are having. However, in the summer 10w30 is just fine, but personally I’d settle on 5w30 if the engine calls for 20.

Last oil change I put in Pennzoil ultra platinum 0w20 replacing the QS 0w20 in my 2019 Tacoma V6. Previous the valve train noise had been hardly noticable with the hood down. Few days ago in a drive thru, so near a wall, with window down the valve noise was very noticeable. I'm a simi regular so I think I would have noticed this noise before this oil change, every 6 month btw. I noticed on pouring the oil in it was noticeable thinner than any oil I ever used but that thin.
You can’t evaluate any noise when against a concrete wall. Everything will always sound louder even when it’s absolutely nothing worth worrying about.

Your probably right about 5w30. I'll try it in the fall.

Your probably right but listening under the same circumstance seems somewhat valid. The difference probably isn't worth mentioning just my OCD I guess.

They are adjustable, need to change shims so it's a major job.
There is no shim. You can replace the entire lifter if needed. In all my years messing with VQ's I have yet to hear of anyone doing so.
