Recommendation, one oil for the garage

SuperTech, or Kirkland, or Prime, or Mobil 1300, etc... Any of these in 15W-40 served me well in every engine I put it in.

I'm a strong believer that more frequent oil changes (3k-5k miles depending on engine in question) with cheapest HDEO is still better for the engine than extended OCIs with boutique oils, or standard OCIs with top shelf synthetics.

It’s that exact “belief” that is why there is such a big market for VRP right now. There are a lot of engines out there with carboned up rings and oil consumption by people who religiously stuck with 3k oil changes with cheap oil.

In many cases they do it because they have a friend who has 400,000 miles on his old truck using cheap oil. But they neglect to mention that these 400k trucks have engines that burn a quart every 1000 miles, smoke up the place when started up, are making 10% less horsepower than they made when new, and are getting way less MPG due to loss of compression.

And the practice of running diesel oil in gas engines is something that needs to stop. It’s not the right oil for the application.

Yep. Some trucker mixed gear oil into his engine that lasted 800,000 miles. Must be good….

Every single HDEO I used is dual rated, mostly pre-API SP, which still meets requirements of every vehicle I put it into. Temps in my climate allow for 15W-40, so why is it wrong if it meets the temp requirements and required API specifications?

I have yet to see a sludged engine after 3k OCIs, even on the cheapest oil.
I do however see plenty of sludged engines and oil burners with likely carboned up rings, BUT in 95% of these cases - the vehicle lives a life of a short tripper. Therefore the outlined issues are not grade, or oil type, or interval length related. But are direct result of short trips, which has a negative effect even on the best of the best oils.

Oil and interval length should be picked on climate AND intended usage. For me a dual rated HDEO 15W-40 hits all the check marks. But I also rarely short trip, every ride is at least 25 miles since I live on the outskirts of the outskirts of the outskirts... As far as OCI - my general rule of thumb is 3k when driven hard or meet other "severe service" criterias, 5k if mostly highway, and 5k for hybrids. All engines seem happy with this, and I still save money VS using just M1 Euro 0W-40 for everything, which is what I've done previously.

I'd use a full synthetic 5w30, or at least 5w20. Any brand sold at Wallyworld I think would be fine.

FWIW I have found Mobil One, Penzoil Platinum, and Chevron to be slightly thinner than Valvoline and Shell.

If using 0w20 or 5w20 for your applications, then I'd choose a brand that runs thicker (such as Valvoline or Shell).

If using 5w30 for your applications, then I'd use a brand that runs thinner (Mobil One, Pennzoil Platinum, or Chevron).

Personally, Pennzoil Platinum or Shell 5w30 would be my 1st choice for your applications. My 2nd choice would be Mobil One 5w30 or Chevron 5w30. My 3rd choice Valvoline 5w20. My 4th choice Valvoline 0w20. I wouldn't use Mobil One or Chevron 0w20 because I think they're too thin.

There might also be other good brands/choices at Wallys. I only have personal experience using and reading specs of those brands in Jeeps and a Buick.
Castrol generally runs thicker as well.

For God's sakes man! This is BITOG. You need AT LEAST a half dozen flavors of oil to post on this site.

The last dual rated HDEO I purchased was Mobil 1300 15W40 API CK-4/SP for $78 Canadian @ Walmart, which works out to $54 USD for a 5 gallon pail.
Also available in 10w30, and it looks like the other Delvac grades have the same additive chemistry.
Once the swamp is drained, California snaps off and floats out to sea and the EPA is history, we can reevaluate the situation.

If you mix equal parts M1 0w40 European, Valvoline extreme blue 5w40 diesel engine formula, 5w30 restore and protect, Quakerstate 10w40, delo 10w30, penzoil 0w30, any brand motorcycle specific 20w50, moto guzzi 10w60, and a teaspoon of cinnamon, you'll have the perfect blend.

For a second I thought I was in the “what are you eating right now” thread 🤣

Looking for an oil recommendation. I've got three cars in the garage, all requiring 0w20. I'd like to use the same oil in all three cars for ease of filling the crankcase and topping up:

1. 2024 Grand Cherokee, Pentastar V6. (Under warranty, 5000 miles)
2. 2023 Subaru BRZ. (Under warranty, 7500 miles)
3. 2019 Nissan Murano. (70000 miles)

The Jeep and Murano will get oil changes every 5k miles which is something like once every six months. The BRZ OCI is 6 months/6000 miles, and for the sake of the warranty I'll go ahead and change it every 6 months even though it really feels like a waste. In 6 months, I probably put 2500 miles on the car - it sits a lot; no track driving. Location: Houston.

Criteria for oil - anything available at Walmart is fair game. I feel the price differences between the oils that they carry is negligible, so we can exclude price.

Is there a better choice than M1 0w20 EP ? It does state that it meets MS-6395 (in case of a warranty related brawl with the dealership), but most of the oils that they carry do. I notice that the BRZ engine is noisy - I understand typical for Subaru - and have read anecdotally that drivetrain noise is sometimes noticed more with M1 but I don't know if there is anything to that.

What would you use?

P.S. Kudos to Chrysler for setting an oil capacity at an even 5.0 qt...
Most definitely Mobil1 EP

been using Penzoil Ultra platinum 0w-20 and got some Royal Purple pcmo,on sale for $22.99 with rebate to use in my car. Quaker State ultimate is also a good oil especially for the price, liking the gtl base for engine oils, as time goes by and the newer SQ,GF-7 comes out you may see more gtl base stocks. time will tell.

I’m hoping that GF-7 will be a game changer for us and that a lot of our favorite oils get a lot better. Perhaps more of them having VRP like cleaning abilities?
