The death of American footbal

I know I'm not watching it hardly at all this year. Between the politics and the incessant flags, I can think of all kinds of things I can be doing on sundays.

I used to be a big NFL fan but I haven't watched one game last year or this year...I don't miss it.
I don't like politics mixed with sports.

If you want some irony look up 'Stedman Bailey' of the St. Louis Rams "HUDS" protest....

It's for a good reason (the outrage, not the kneeling)...

Then why didn't we still see the outrage during the off season?

How can a player 'take a knee' during the offseason?

Yes, it is a bad thing.

So, you admit it is about disrespecting the flag, the anthem, and the country that lets them play a game and become millionaires. It is not about oppression.

Gotcha.

NFL franchise, its clothing & gear, and all of their sponsors get not ONE DIME from me for all their efforts.

We could go back to the good ole days where people fight to the death for entertainment. The romans would think everything about our society is "sissy".

So you think sissifying the police, the firefighters, and the military is a good thing as well?

We need more Bruce Jenners? Bradley Mannings?

Not sure I buy the notion the world is getting more civilized. Leaders are still willing to kill people who don't go along with them.

There are those who think it's okay to rob, maim and kill in the name of righting wrongs as they perceive them to be.

There seem to be no shortage of the enemies of civil society both here and outside our borders.

Even if we are becoming a more civilized society, that doesn't mean it translates into the world becoming more civilized.

I'd suggest any civilization we experience is but a thin veneer. All it takes is one bad situation for that veneer to be stripped away and more base impulses take over.

NFL will always exist. It's too big and too popular and has woven itself into people's living rooms because it's a good televised game.

The game of American football is dying. People are learning more and more about the effects of long term sub-concussive head trauma, especially in younger people, and just do not choose to introduce their kids into that. That is translating into a precipitous drop in participation numbers. Leagues are folding, consolidating, and moving to 7 on 7 flag all over the place. A local high school of 5000 kids had 8 kids try out for sophomore level and less than 20 for freshman. They combined them and dropped the freshman teams.

The NFL's reaction to the mounting liability has certainly changed the game. Just like other rule changes, the players will adjust over time. This season I've only watched one quarter of NFL football (Bears/Cardinals) and it is a different game. But my sample size is small, but a lot of people seem to think the same. It will be interesting if they keep the rules and let the players adjust, or admit they changed the game and it's fundamental components too much and retreat on the rule changes.

And yet, data shows there are more concussions in girls' high school soccer than in boys high school football.

I stopped watching precisely because of the "disrespecting the flag, the anthem, and the country that lets them play a game and become millionaires."

The whole 'BLM' thing is based on a 'false narrative' when 3% of the population commits over 50% of all violent crimes and murders...that's why they have so many 'interactions' with police....'BCM'..with 'C' standing for CRIME....

As far as the excessive flags for roughing the QB, sorry, but they're necessary. Why? Because football, more than any other sport, is dependent on the play of one person, the QB. Lose an NFL QB, and a team's season might well be over after the third game. Just ask the 49ers right now with Garoppolo lost for the rest of the season. His replacement? C.J. Beathard, who led the team to a 1-9 record last year.

An equally significant issue, at least at the college (and high school) level, is the decreasing number of competitive games. Many of these games televised on Saturdays are over after the first eight minutes. If Alabama or Ohio State gets up on an opponent 14-0 in the first quarter ... I'm sorry, but 99% of the time the game is over, so I'm switching channels.

All in all, depending on your viewpoint, this has also made hockey somewhat better to watch as this allows more skilled players to show their stuff.

I still miss a good tilt every now and then but I also love watching what these kids can do not that most of the goons are gone.

Times change and unfortunately with the concussion protocols nowadays in most sports, the sports we all grew up on watching have changed.

You must be watching a different league than the NHL. Big hits will always be part of the game. Staged fights are gone, but fighting keeps the game honest. There's only one true enforcer left in the league: Micheal Haley but the NHL is becoming more about skating really fast anyway. I love physical games between division rivals.

What has ever happened in a football game that is controversial?

A bad call or a dirty move?

That is why people watch football.

What is rediculous is that people say there is outrage, I have never seen it, maybe some wining girls but no outrage.
Now some of the players antics off the field be it drugs, women or whatever should get outrage but doesn't.

I also think it was a huge error and waste of time televising the National anthem in every football game after 911.
As a kid all that fluff was cut out but every play went through instant replay for review by officials, if you think a football game is long, watch one from the 80's

New national anthem rule on hold. Business as usual this season.

It's turning into a political springboard for activists, which is something that I do not want to watch. RIP

Isn't it Collingswood vs West Coast for the Grand Final?

Yup, Eagles and Magpies. Sadly St Kilda had another season to not write home about. At least I got my 5 year member pin.

While there is mixed data, reasons, and conclusions to this statement, I wasn't speaking of concussions.
