T6 or M1 TDT?

So I've been looking at some UOAs for each oil to determine which one is better for a ~10K OCI on my 2011 6.7L F350.

Unfortunately I can't find very many UOAs of the CJ4 blend with non-HEUI injection systems. Looks like T6 holds up very well for 10,000 miles in this application, but I can't find a good one for Mobil1.

O'Reilly has M1 TDT gallons for $20, so the price difference is negligible. Which would be better oil for my application?

Thanks!

Both are really good but I'd lean towards T6. Delvac 10w30 and 15w40 are good too.

Has to be a 5w40 due to the cold weather we're going to have this winter.

I have fresh 10w30 in there right now courtesy of a warranty turbo replacement, but Ford specs 5w or 0w oil for below zero starting, which there will be plenty of in January.

Flip a coin, if it is 5w40, each one will have the cold specs you need and both are good oils. It really is that easy.

I'd personally stay away from the 0wxx if you are using the truck for duty conditions. Not quite as tough and is not spec'd for severe duty in your truck.

Both choices are excellent. UOAs of both looked good. I always buy SOPUS so my decision would be Rotella.

Tom: I went through this last winter... I did a bit of looking and came up with these 2 vigin samples of the oils.

I just copied the most popular additives.

RTS 5W-40 M1 TDT 5W-40
Moly---63ppm 0ppm
Boron--65ppm 78ppm
Cal----751ppm 1015ppm
Mag----1197ppm 746ppm
Phos---1078ppm 938ppm
Zinc---1262ppm 1118ppm

This was around Dec of last yr..I'm sure the blends have changed a bit by now... They are pretty close...2 good HDD oils.

Choose which ever one U have easier access too...Both will protect your investment for many yrs.

Thanks for the replies everyone!

Just got some M1 TDT at O'Reilly's for a good price. I have one quart of leftover TDT from my 6.4L oil change last winter, and with a 13-quart oil capacity for the new truck I only had to buy three gallons.

Thought of mixing my one quart of TDT with 12 of T6, but for 50 cents difference per gallon I figured the TDT may work better.

What happened? I've been keeping an eye on the forums for any warranty issues with 6.7s, do you think your problem was a fluke?

It certainly was a fluke. I spend a LOT of time on FTE, and I've read enough there and elsewhere to know that this is not a common problem for this engine.

My problem was the noise it was making on cold starts. Otherwise it always performed just fine, never had a driveability concern with it. I just was concerned that with the noise it was making I might have a failure down the road.

Odd. It almost sounds like a harmonic between the turbine blades and stator blades or something like that. With all the gadgetry involved in a modern diesel exhaust system (DPF, pee injection, regeneration injection, etc.) its not surprising that you'd get some odd interactions between the parts as the exhaust pulses pass thru.

I see the doubters are out in force on YouTube saying they don't trust the 6.7 and would buy a Duramax. Blah. Anything that needs injectors at 130k miles, as a co-workers Duramax did, isn't worth owning. The 6.7 looks like a great engine in the long run even if they do have to iron out a few annoyances.

I'm pretty sure that's exactly what it was. I was concerned because none of the other 6.7L owners I spoke with had ever heard this noise before, and I was concerned it could lead to something down the road.

But the truck always drove great, so there's the chance that it could have gone 200,000 miles without a problem. It's been a great truck otherwise!

T6 starts at 14.2. This has me skeptical.

By the way-->Congrats on the SD.. I haven't had a chance to drive one or ride in one,but I have heard Ford did this one Right!!!

Are calcium and mag detergents, what's boron for?

Cal & Mag = dispersant/detergent additive.

As for boron? Here a very indepth post and thread by MolaKule in 03... Lots of good info.

"The borate in addition can form an iron borate with the metal surface and as a result applies a hard surface layer directly to the metal. This affords an additional level of protection against wear."
Thus creating a very good antiwear additive.

T6 was not one of the oils tested. Pre-T6 RTS was.
