After finding out that Honda made 0w-20 backward compatible I would like to start using it in my 2006 Honda Accord 2.4. I like the fact that the 0w-20 flows better at start up than a 5w-20. Should I just use PP 0w-20 or is there something better for my application? Ive read a little about TGMO and it seems to be good, but many talk about VI or something, and that TGMO is SUPER light at start up, much lighter than other 0w-20...is this true? and would it pose a problem for my car? What would be the best 0w-20 to run year round in my Accord (2006 113,000 miles). If it will cause more harm than good then ill just stick to 5w-20, but if the lighter at start up thing is better, I would rather use a 0w-20. Would TGMO be the best 0w-20 or is it TOO light? and can someone explain what VI means?

TGMO 0W-20 is great. I run it in my Accord. My UOA shows that it's doing well.

VI stands for Viscosity Index. Read here and you'll understand better: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Viscosity_index

Any of the oils that donnyj08 mentioned will be fine. Even PYB 5W-20 for your application would be more than sufficient. Honestly with the cheapest 5W-20 your K24 will far outlast the body and time you will own the car... they are EASY on oil.

Dude, I really dont care...I enjoy BITOG. I like learning new things, and I like trying new things.

A common myth.
Even a room temperature a the High VI OEM 0W-20s such as TGMO and Mazda moly 0W-20 will be about 30% lighter than a 5W-20 and still a bit lighter at normal operating temp's.
Put simply, it is a lighter oil and if a 0W-20 is specified, you will benefit using an OEM 0W-20.

its not specified, but it is back specked to my car....and as many starts as i do, and short trips....i think i may benifit from using a 0w-20 vs a 5w-20. idk for sure though

Surfstar is of course right in his intent: it doesn't really matter, that engine would last forever on any spec'd oil. That said, you gotta put something in there, so why not over-analyze things like everyone else! I'm using the old high VI Honda oil, and when it's gone I'll probably go back to the TGMO. This is in two Fords spec'd for 5W20. While I think the benefit is small and doesn't really matter in the long run, I figure an oil that's closer to the ideal viscosity at start-up is a good thing, and I don't see any downsides to the high-VI oils. They've proven to me that they work well in service.

I've used a high VI 0W20 in my Freestyle for about 50K miles now: engine (that I can see) is spotless, fuel economy is as good as ever and consumption is minimal (and the same as when I got the car). No, I don't think 10W30 would ruin my engine, but for me I'm using what I think is "best". Because, like you, I have to put something in there.

Since the 0W-20 grade is back spec'd for your car you we clearly benefit from the high VI technology. It is simply a better lubricant for your car, especially the way you operate it.

The following video of Nippon Oil (Sustina) who first developed the high VI 0W-20 for Toyota (before Mobil took over NA production), describes the advantages of a ultra high VI oil. Skip to the half way point:

ok....I think for this next oil change ill use the Honda A01 filter and ill try and see if walmart will switch out the 5w20 PP for some 0w20 PP. Ill see if i can switch it out tomorrow.

Didn't you just change the oil?

I'm betting you'll change your mind before its time to change the oil.

Sorry to be a **** - but you're waaaay over-thinking this.

Depending on which data sheet is correct, the PP VI ranges from 160-179 in these grades.

You will not be getting the supposed benefits of switching to a high VI (200+) oil by switching out that PP 5w20 for PP 0w20.

Yes....I change my oil every 3000 miles regardless. I went on vacation 8 hours away and racked up miles quickly...ill be changing it out in about a month. So just doing a little research before hand. What do you mean ill change my mind before changing my oil...saying ill just stick with the 5w-20?

Changing a synthetic oil at 3000 miles is a waste of money and it's not great for the environment either. It's like going to an all-you-can-eat buffet, getting a huge plate of food, eating half of it and leaving. If you have to change it every 3000, just use SuperTech 5W-20 - save your money, you'll need it someday.

Mobil 1 0W20, it's easy to get, cheap [someone always has a sale on it, or just go to Walmart], is probably the #1 selling 0W20, and it has plenty of good UOA reports here to back it up.

I'm going the other way, at least for a couple changes on my Accord, since I have 10 qts of PU 5W-20 in the shed. I guess I could blend it in with the 5w30 in the Altima and Corolla.
