On Monday, our representative from a local parts distributor stopped by and showed off a new line of oil filters they have started carrying. The brand name is "Pronto", and they appear to be constructed by the same company that produced/produces the "Driveworks" brand for Advance Auto Parts. The filters are made in China and Korea, depending on the application. I purchased four of them for my truck for $1.90 a piece. They are obviously intended to be a quick lube/shop filter. The construction is very sturdy, almost to the feel a heft of a WIX. I figure they'll be fine for my conservative OCI's. Just putting it out there.

I think there have been some threads here in the last 6 months or so that show photos of them cut open.

They look decent. For the price, I'm surprised by the construction. I know the efficiency rating is questionable, but again, at that price and obvious sales point, I think they are pretty darned nifty.

We use the Pro Gauge line of filters. Very similar in construction to the Pronto and the Driveworks. They are built like a tank. I use them with confidence. These private label filters from China are very well built, and are well worth the money that you pay for them.

I thought they were built pretty well. I purchased four, at least one for my truck and one for several other cars. Truth be told, I haven't ever come across a "bad" oil filter, although I'm not a fan of the E-core. If I end up liking these Prontos', I'll probably start buying them for the cars I personally maintain.

Oil filters are practically made with zero man hours in modern factories in the U.S. and Canada. I'm sure there's a lot more profit in the well known name brand oil filters. Becoming a fan boy of cheaply sourced oil filters made by someone who rides a bicycle to work scares me where were headed.

If there is truly zero man hours behind it, it may not matter.

But in reality, there are friends and neighbors' jobs behind it, because even automated manufacturing requires oversight, maintenance, programming, etc.

And how sad is this, that Chinese filters are better than FRAMs have been for decades? Oh merciful heavens

Rockauto also sells them. They're about $1.66 for my car plus shipping. I don't think I'm going to bother, going to stick with either Purolator, Motorcraft or a PureOne. Don't really need the $1-$2 savings that badly.

Did the sales rep also have the filtering specs available? Seems that a lot of import filters look good, but the specs are nowhere to be seen.

Somebody don't like this ! Anything made in China is supposed to be junk !

They always look good when cut open, so efficiency seems to be the only real question. Efficiency might not be that big of a deal since Honda and Toyota engines last a long time despite their OE filters apparently not being as efficient as many of the popular aftermarket filters.

Here's one somebody cut open: https://bobistheoilguy.com/forums/ubbthreads.php?ubb=showflat&Number=1838720

So far, nobody has posted a picture of one with torn media (of course not many used ones have been cut open). I like how they aren't using a combination anti-drainback and bypass valve. For the money, they seem to be a good deal, but I remain more comfortable with OEM, WIX, or FRAM at this point since these three are affordable, readily available locally, and are know to be good quality.

Has anyone tried contacting them for specs: http://www.pronto-net.com/page.php?page_id=contact.php&execute=1&menu=about.menu

The Fram cartridge filters I use, bought at Walmart, extra guard and tough guards, are good quality, and they have great ISO 4548-12 performance with glass fibers blended in. Pronto would likely never tell you their performance. How do you say "Trust Us" in Chinese?

Yeah, the cartridges have always been (needed to be?) good quality, at least visually.

Not only are they a newer style, but they could never get away with that uneven pleat distribution, irregular glue application and overall shoddy assembly and materials that the can filters got.

For the price I wouldn't complain, but without the R&D like Fram does, I'll trust the TG or XG. Do you think the Pronto is rated for 99% @20 microns for 10 or 15k miles.

Either way I'm always game for cut open filter pictures, especially if they were pushed hard.

At our Garage In Michigan we use Group 7 and have been using them for years...
Somtimes we will get a car with a filter we dont have in stock and have to order it from the local auto parts store that we have a account with.

However Group 7 is a divsion of Purolator..

I wonder if they are having problems like the rest of Purolators?

However I have seen pics and posted pics of driveworks oil filters and they look to be strong however the materials for the paper element is probably a basic celluose paper.

Still great deal.

I've seen those Prontos on Rock Auto for $1-2/piece. They may be decent but for a few dollars more I prefer to stick with a well made brand name filter. Just this simple....the minimal cost savings vs the risk of my engine does not compute in my mind.

I think the roughly 1200-1300 people working in the southern IL Fram Filtration plant would disagree with this. I also think the people who have been laid off in these facilities would disagree with the idea of more profit in brand names.
