HPL PPMCO vs. Valvoline Restore and Protect?

Sponsor or not. Praise goes to people, businesses etc that earn it. I just dabble in my oil changes and have tried many things from many recommendations for cleaning etc. over the years. Some worked some didn't and I passed that on the same way.

The results I saw in my own vehicles from HPL EC30 led me to want to try more. The others users who had a lot of interaction and response from HPL and their service is phenomenal. I reached out to Dave with some geared to my use/concerns and he responded very quickly. One member even posted that he was told by them NOT to use their oil as it would be waste of their money for what they were looking for from it.

Old friend (RIP) was BMW mechanic. He told me to try some BG Synchro Shift II in my Corolla MT tranny. 3 shops said I needed a rebuild after many fluid changes. BG fixed my issue and drove another 100k with perfect shifts until it got totaled. Same scenario for their BG 44k vs Techron for me. I also had some BG concerns when Toyota used something I didn't ask for. BG tech support confirmed my concerns and sent email with details. Toyota dealer did 3 more tranny D&F after that. I respect and will use BG products.

I praised many doctors I had experience with and said stay away from others. Those doctors earned their respective reputations.

The VRP seems to be a really good alternative so far to help many get and stay clean for no extra money vs other quality oils. When my stash of other stuff runs out I will probably try and then cut filters to see my own experience.

Mobil 1 is great as well as others. When you have vehicles that have been on steady diets of M1/PP, no extended changes and you always cut filters before with nothing noted. Then you switch to VRP or HPL and find lots of junk in the filters or noticeably reduced oil usage and less start up noise etc. then maybe you will be open for other options. Maybe even praise those products and companies.
Thats all fine and dandy. I'm glad you have had good luck with HPL. Im sorry you have had so many doctors in your life to praise and stay away from. I'm not sure how to relate doctors to engine oil.

VRP is new as of 1-2 months ago. Ive seen this song and dance time and time again on BITOG. The new thing comes out, its a bangwagon. Everybody jumps on. Dave is a good guy. I have met Dave. Dave is in the market to sell oil. I'm glad he is successful.

You seem easily swayed to now jump onto the VRP bandwagon. Im sure its going to solve all of your oil related problems and clean all your dirty engines better than any other oil there is. Have you been finding lots of "junk" in your filters? Maybe its time to shorten your oil change intervals or not jump on the bandwagons?

I live in a cold climate up north so I add 10 oz. of MSo2 every oil change (brand name Liquid Moly). Molybdenum is a lubricant that bonds with the metal and is used widely in heavy industrial high heat and high pressure machinery.
LM MoS2 has been shown to fall out of suspension & accumulate in the bottom of the oil pan. This form (MoS2) of moly is not useful in an engine; gearboxes and differentials, yes. LM knows it’s not going to cause any harm because of its propensity to accumulate in the oil pan, and it makes them a very nice profit which is why they continue to sell it.

Save your money and buy a better engine oil. 👍🏻

There’s also the fact that it’s foolish to think adding something else to a fully formulated motor oil is going to do anything. Those tribologists know what our motors need in their entirety and they know a helluva lot more than Most of us on the topic!

First thought…

Where is that Buffer guy saying, “ Are we ready to rumble ?”. .

2nd thought… Mobil 1 EP is a really good motor oil… Nothing needs to change in this circumstance.

3rd thought… HPL makes amazingly good motor oils. But nothing to truly be gained by changing to HPL in this circumstance.

4th and final thought… Both though #2 and #3 can be true and that is fine too.

+1 Be careful saying that around here. ;)

Even @TiGeo only uses MoS2 in his differential or whatever VW calls it.

Not saying MoS2 doesn’t have valid uses; I’m just saying it doesn’t belong in an engine.
I've used in plenty of times in my engine(s) as well. The fall out of suspension boogie man is based on what...one person here's observation in a vehicle that sat for a long period and then was started briefly before the pan came off? Pics of my pan here somewhere when it was off without any MoS2 in it.

Shooters seem to feel it is an excellent bullet coating. I've used it for a couple of decades now, or close to it. I have a ceramic coating I believe too, maybe I'll coat some bullets with that over the winter. The company that sells the MoS2 recommended against using it in engines, that and some of the commentary here was enough for me. But hey if someone thinks it has some value in an engine go for it!

One of those was wife's OB/GYN. Actually berated my wife for going to hospital with raging sinus infection (she had multiple sinus surgeries over the years) saying she is going to be a mom and should tough it out. 102F fever due to infection. We took her records and left. Found new doctor from other recommendations. Try that with a 4-5 month pregnant woman.

Some times there are some good songs and dances and good times and experiences shared with friends

This is a harder one- easily swayed? I'd say more on the willing to try something different for possible improvements even as experience to learn good and bad. I know I read and lurked here for a long time before joining. I believe I found BITOG when my '93 Corolla was burning almost a quart every 1k and I was looking for options. The Gunk Motor flushes, MMO and others didn't seem to help. The less than 3k changes with QS or Pennzoil didn't help. I was working at Jiffy lube for extra money and no issue doing free drain and fills every 1k. At that time Auto-Rx was the most discussed thing, with nothing to lose I tried and followed the directions. It got me down to less than 1/2 qt every 1k after the full thing. Started getting even better than unfortunately car was totaled.

When you run quality syn like M1 and PP and your higher mileage vehicle oil stays clean for over 1k most would say that their motor is well maintained, clean with no issues. Maybe you do some BG EPR, LM or other flushes just for your own piece of mind with no noticeable gains because you didn't have any issues prior. Then maybe because your bored or want to scratch that itch you try some bandwagon stuff and find junk in filters you have never seen before. Maybe one of your vehicles is quieter at start up that your wife makes the comment about it. Maybe that bandwagon juice freed up some things to move freely keeping piston centered better or maybe total coincidence.

Maybe it's a nice option for DIY's that it is commercially available and seems to work so far. If I can buy M1/PP at Walmart for about $28 or try the VRP for the same price. I can always pick something else if I don't like it. Maybe time will change that how good it works perception/reality like the vaccine in I am Legend. Remember we DIY oil changers AND BITOG members are a very small part of the auto world. Most go to dealers, quick lubes or local mechanic and have no clue on options.

Yes I have reduced some OCI's on some vehicles due to UOA results, GDI and short trips. The factory MM just wasn't giving the warm and fuzzies. Other cars get much better highway use, I'm good with MM, maybe or maybe I just want to change earlier or I know I can go an extra couple thousand miles if life gets in the way of plans.

M1- My dad started using it in late 1970's in moms '75 Ford LTD. That was our family trip, travel trailer hauler. Everyone said he was crazy, it would leak like a sieve, too thin, nothing wrong with conventional oil, why waste your money. Car stayed on that until it rotted out and ran great no leaks. He also bought Hella H4 and H1 headlights with replaceable Halogen bulbs not available in USA. Naysayers said waste of money, nothing wrong with the tungsten yellow blobs, everyone else is fine with them. We did a lot of night driving on rural highways with lots of deer. All cars also got Hella fog lights and driving lights relayed with high beams so not to blind others. We also tried early LED's which sucked and went back to Halogen and then HID. I guess I'm as easily swayed as he was or as open to possible. Like many say, the older I get, the smarter my parents actually were.

So there you have some of my easily swayed, bandwagon experience. Maybe you are just more resistant to change, review, possibilities and believe the earth is still flat. Maybe we really are some other beings pocket toy like the marbles in MIB.

Stay healthy, I do truly hope all you do is the best for you and never any vehicle or health issues and your monetary investments always stay positive.

Thank you all for your input. So my takeaways are as follows.

Mobil1 EP: tried and true, why bother changing what works well?

HPL PPCMO: Many fans here. Great stuff for a number of applications, but not mine.

Valvoline R&P: The BITOG jury is still out on this one with only anecdotal evidence and one UOA.

Presently I am just over 50% of the recommended 2 year / 20k OCI on my vehicle so I have some time to wait for more evidence on the latter. My current thought is to just run the Mobil1 EP through the winter where it will experience frequent short tripping to provide heat, then change it in the spring before a major road trip.

I've never understood how many of the big LiquiMoly fans insist on buying the oil plus an additive and think it's incredible.

The oil is so good that it could use an additive topper from the get-go? Okay...

Vrp has been out since 2023

Just saw this - and it’s not an accurate characterization of Dave or of his company, HPL.

The entire consumer market is less than 1% of his sales. His focus is on racing, and on large fleets.

We, the group on BITOG, are an insignificant part of their revenue. You ascribe far too much importance to your own oil purchases, and our collective impact on HPL’s revenues.

He isn’t here “to sell oil”, because there is no ROI here. He is here solely because he is a fellow enthusiast.

Because it seems like Mobil 1 has been doing the job so far. What are you looking to achieve with HPL?

Dont forget, HPL is the forum sponsor. Its going to get praise no matter what.
Again, you claim something that isn’t true.

This site has several sponsors, not just HPL. HPL is not “THE Site sponsor”.

All of those sponsors make good products.

HPL crafts oil to a very different standard of performance, and a different price point, using different bases, and better additive packages, than most companies.

They build to a performance goal, not a price point.

An analogy from the world of woodworking. There are many fine hand planes at a modest price point that work well and meet the needs of most craftsmen.

And then there are Lie-Nielsen planes.

Yup, oil companies focused on profit and making a go in the consumer space don't blend forum members their own oil just because they asked. Dave is a fellow enthusiast and gearhead who also happens to own an oil company. He participates here because he wants to, not because he's trying to make a sale. He likes to talk about oil, racing and supports this community. He gives us discounts on products and has let members tour his facility. He's the one doing us the favour, because that's the type of guy he is, we aren't doing him one by buying his stuff.

That's of course not to say he doesn't appreciate our efforts to support him, he absolutely does, but our purchases are not significant in the operation of his company.

Yup - industrial compressors and gear boxes are not sexy to most here - but the Tribologist given those may not agree …

industrial compressors are all the rage in my plant right now. cant keep one running for a week before it has some sort of failure. iirc its a dooson unit. we have portable CAT branded compressors running one of our trains right now.
