Ticks can be exhaust leaks or cracked exhaust manifolds. Look for white lines on the manifolds...tighten up the manifold to y-pipe studs.
It can be carbon. GM has an upper cylinder cleaner available at dealer that you pour in through the sparkplug holes and let sit overnight. Seafoam (NAPA among others) is the standard carbon cleaner and works wonders. Apply same way or suck in via some small vacuum hose at fast idle on hot engine. When it stops smoking the carbon is gone. Change the oil afterwards.
