Bought a new Tundra

I am in the market for a new truck and am looking at the Tundra. If I do choose a Tundra, I will make sure to have adequate factory warranty coverage and would likely purchase an extended policy. Along with choosing the highest quality oil and frequent changes. Today, Ford uses rubber oil pump belts, GM and Ram still have lifter issues, Nissan is a has-been and it seems almost every choice has some risk. The one engine that seems robust is Ford's 3.5EB, but having owned one, I would prefer anything else due to sound and feel as mine sounded like a UPS truck, groaning when under high load on long trips.
Is the 2025 Ram on the list to check out? We have a few on the lot. The mild facelift looks good imo. Of course, too soon to tell on how the engine will perform long term. They still are putting the V6 in the 25s.

Two month update.....

After a couple months and 1600 miles I have had a chance to get settled with my new Tundra.

PROS- Pretty much a list of the reasons that I bought it which include comfort, power, tech, differential locker, handling, capabilities and overall competence. I also love the power rear window which is a feature that other trucks have too but that I've never had before. I'm still averaging 21mpg although I haven't towed yet.

NEGATIVES- The center console seems like an afterthought, it's big but oddly designed and I'm not a fan. This thing has the turning radius of the Queen Mary. I expected this to a point because it's a big truck but pulling into tight areas requires forethought.

The radio volume control knob is small and at the lower left corner of the info screen and I keep touching the screen with my finger and changing screens while adjusting the volume. I know that there is volume adjustment on the steering wheel but old habits die hard.

OBSERVATIONS- Overall I am really happy with it. As I mentioned earlier in this thread, I probably would have been fine with another Tacoma since it would have been more than enough to handle my towing and hauling needs. But I'm 6'-5" tall and I can afford the bigger truck and now that I'm in my 60s I wanted the extra room in the cab and comfort. I actually have the driver's seat set one notch up from all the way back which is unusual for me.

I have added mudflaps and floor mats and I am trying to decide whether I want a bed cap or tonneau cover. The truck is scheduled to be undercoated with fluid film next week and the engine hasn't imploded yet. :)

I will change the oil at 5000 miles and get the free dealer oil change at 10,000 miles. The spec oil grade is 0w-20 but I was going to go with Pennzoil 5w-30 UP but am now leaning towards Mobil1 0w-40. Thoughts?

I have ran 0w40 in my 2015 3.5 Ecoboost since it was new 98xxx, still nice and quiet 5-5.500 mile oil changes. If I had a new Tundra I would do the same. Not a fan of 0w20 in a turbo engine. I run 5w30 in our 2022 4Runner.

I would have zero issue with using 0W20. Diligence on the every 5k OCI.
When do you plan to change the factory fill on the transmission, differential, & transfer case?
I honestly haven't even looked at the other fluids since the first change is probably a year or two away but thanks for reminding me.

Why wait for 5k mile oil change? Doesn’t this engine suffer from the factory machining debris?
The guys on one of the Tundra forums have a spreadsheet that logs all of the known engine failures with oil change and other info. There is no data to confirm that repeated early oil changes help. It seems that if you get a bad one it's gonna grenade at some point no matter what you do.

Thinking about it, that kind of makes sense. If machining debris is floating around in the oil then the filter should catch most of it. I don't even know if the whole machining debris thing makes sense to me but I am not a mechanical engineer.

That being said, I did change the oil & filter at 600 miles. Not because I thought it would help but more that it couldn't hurt. The engine failure rate is still under 1% even for the early first year '22s so we shall see. The engine really is amazing.

Thanks for the update. Sounds like you like the truck which is all that matters!

I'm with you on a twin turboed motor, I would also run a slightly thicker oil. It's funny you mention that about the console. I haven't actually sat in one, but in pictures I thought to myself some of the proportions and design elements look a bit odd.

Happy motoring 🍻

First, nice truck! I am glad you are enjoying it.

Re the oil changes, unless you are 95% highway cruising, I think 10K is too long on almost any vehicle. I would get the dealer changes at the even 10K marks (20,000, 30,000, 40,000) but dump the oil only keeping the filter in place at the 5000 marks (25,000, 35,000, 45,000).

That way you get 5000 mile oil changes and never have to buy a filter. I do this with my own vehicles.

That's a great plan. Unfortunately, Toyota limits the free oil change services to two years.

Oil & filter change every 10k and just an oil change every 5k is what I've been doing with my wife's Rav4 and that's the plan for my Tundra as well.

I'd run what Toyota recommends,0w20. I love my Tundra. I use my truck for work, putting 24500 miles on it since I bought it in May with 0 issues.

Serious question?
With the motor problems these trucks have had/and possible replacement on the horizon-what possible rational would you have for running oil other than what is speced for that truck?

I am sticking with the 0w-20 for now and of course I will let my dealer do the 10 and 20k free changes.

I have made this point many times here with little luck or acceptance. If I had a vehicle with known issues, even if rare but significant enough that Toyota has a quasi recall, I would follow the manual irrespective of how the language is phrased so that if there is an issue I put all the risk back on Toyota and not allow for any weasel factor. But fwiw I agree with you.

I agree with you especially during the warranty period, you don't want to give them excuse to weasel out as you say.

After the warranty expires however, it's not so clear for me. The Tundra with the same V35A engine has 5w-30 oil recommended in Australia according to an Australian who posts on one of the Tundra forums. And this is the same company that recommends 10k OCIs.
