54 week old LG refrigerator failure

The old saying applies when it is said they don't make them like they used to.. Might be worth to keep the older units going when they quit instead of buying new.

I'm sure they all have good and bad ones. But I've NEVER had an LG or Samsung apliance that worked for very long without problems. I've also been through a number of Bosch dishwashers. They are big on looks and features, but crap in terms of durability.

On the flip side, I've had great experience with Whirlpool/Maytag/Kitchenaid. The only issue for me is my current dryer, which just doesn't get things dry in one cycle, even on "more dry" setting. I just have to run it an extra 15 to 25 minutes each time.

My brother has my parent's old Frididaire refrigerator that my Dad bought around 1976. It was from when General Motors owned the company. He has it at his business to keep cold drinks for employees. Works as good as ever, even though it looks like it belongs in the Brady Bunch house. So why did GM get out of the appliance business? They built them too well, which meant they cost more than people were willing to pay. That old fridge belongs in the Smithsonian.
Wow dude 😲
Seriously though I bought my mother two top of the line Bosch dishwashers and they were used very infrequently and both died in under 4 years..
Totally agree..
Crap!!

I haven't bought anything recently - but I have a Samsung washer / dryer that is coming up on 10 years old and survived 2 teenage girls. The dryer needed a heating element twice and new rollers once, the washer has been fine even though the sheet metal around the bleach container has completely rusted out.

Surprised to hear people tossing expensive dishwashers - there are only like 5 parts that can break. Refrigerator is likely the hardest to fix due to compressor - dishwasher, washer, dryer - all repairable, there usually is YouTube video for one similar.

One had the keypad fail twice in under 2 years. The other had the wheels on the racks start coming off after about a year and then it developed leaks around the door seal and its keypad then failed. Horrible. I then bought a cheap and much less fancy Kitchenaid and it's going on 5 years now with no trouble.

They were under warranty and ultimately replaced by Best Buy due to too many service visits. I bought 5 year warranties on them. Ultimately, they let you replace them with something of equal or lesser value unless you pay the difference for something more expensive. I switched brands at that point.

I have been exclusively buying Frigidaire appliances for our homes. I always purchase extended warranties direct from frigidaire. So far no problems with any of them. The fridge was a cheapie from HD and the dishwashers were one Gallery and 2 lower models. They are not noisey and they clean good. The fridge could use a better shelf layout but we adapt to what it has.

I had a Frigidaire dishwasher when I had an apartment in Tampa eons ago. It died and all I had to do was cycle the circuit breaker and it worked again even though it wasn’t tripped.

Interesting that when a company with a once good name like LG decides to screw up it's reputation they manage to do it in more than one country across the world. They don't seem to care that they are doing either. Poor build with excessive complexity is only the start. Then what I believe thy do at least in the UK is appoint a useless local agent for after sales care and decline to supply said agent with spare parts in a timely manner. Result is severely annoyed customers who won't come back.

6 month old LG Refrigerator, Washer and Dryer. Like them all a lot. Will let you know if something happens.
I think any appliance can go bad and VERY slims options for American products anymore. Heck, there wasnt even a viable American brand refrigerator to us, construction on the Whirlpools were shoddy at best, fit and finish awful.

Really tried to buy American, but they can not compete anymore, our past house was Kenmore Elite and Whirlpool, dead on reliable on everything, though I did replace the ice maker and a $10 plastic part in the washer but all of them going strong when we sold the house 15 years later and why we were shocked at the sloppy construction of the Whirlpool appliances we were seeing to buy for our new home.
LG had the look and feel of quality which we love.
Builder supplied GE cook top, oven/microwave and dishwasher which is GE's higher level of appliances and matches with the LG.

54 weeks is a little short life span. Since mid-20th century refrigerators and other kitchen appliances are a fashion statement so a long lifespan is not a desirable quality. Quite a large segment of the population would rather buy an appliance with 3-5 year lifespan than spend 5 times as much and get a more robust device.

It's similar to houses. We prefer to buy stick built plywood boxes rather than spend far more money on proper stone built home. Because we know it's not going to stay in the family for generations and we prefer to spend less and move out a few years later.

A little over a year ago, I was at my brother’s house and his wife was showing off their new refrigerator. It was purchased from a box store, cost $3K, French door model (side-by-side doors with freezer on the bottom) and had all the bells and whistles. Fast-forward to last week and my wife was visiting their house. My wife commented about the brand new refrigerator that WASN’T the same one that was purchased a year ago. My SIL clenched her jaw and her temple bulged (what my wife said) and the story came out. Their new LG refrigerator purchased slightly over a year ago had a one year warranty and it failed after 54 weeks. Nobody would stand behind it (hey, your warranty has expired!) and they had to buy a new one. The irony is that my brother is a HVAC/electrician man with 50 years experience, but a year ago his wife purchased this without his help. I wonder if she asked for his buying help this time. Or at least got one with a better warranty. 😎
Moral of the story: Check the warranty on your high ticket appliances before you buy them.
Check out YouTube appliance repair ppl that say to avoid LG frigs because of compressor failure- been a long term issue.

Uh, yea…I’ll tell my sister-in-law that, if she already doesn’t know. 😎

If you say the warranty is 1 year, then I say where’s the quality control, it should have failed week 53, not 54

I bought a LG Fridge when covid was going on... Its ok. Its basic. Its quiet. I put a small dent into it week 2. The front i so thin. It was from the corner of a cardboard chicken nugget box. Such a joke. I'll probaby replace it with a Wirlpool, which what I wanted but over a year wait. Everything is junk now but we are saving the planet from "climate change".

I recently bought a new LG French door refrigerator. I was quite nervous about the whole experience, as I have read so many experiences with early failure of LG refrigerators, like those shared here. But when I did my homework, I found that all brands of French door refrigerators have poor reliability ratings. According to my research, the most problematic area on newer refrigerators is the in-door ice bins. So I selected a refrigerator with the ice machine and bin in the freezer, and only a water dispenser in the door.

It came with a 5 year warranty on the compressor. In addition, I got an extended warranty, and by financing with my 0% interest for 18 month account, they added an additional 2 years to the warranty. IIRC, I have a total of 7 years coverage parts and labor.

I don't really want the refrigerator to have an early demise. But if it does, I'm feeling protected.

had a linear compressor model that lasted 10 years and was running when we moved out. luck of the draw.

LG reefer experience a complete disaster. Had to remove a glacier of ice at the bottom of the freezer compartment every few weeks. The bottom freezer door could not close unless we did the aforementioned ice breaker maneuver to free up the bottom door. Stay away from LG refrigerators in my opinion.
