When did you realize you were old?

When Smashing Pumpkins Bullet with butterfly wings just now come on the classic rock station. That came out what 1995ish?

I just celebrated my 69th birthday two weeks ago. Just a few days before, it occurred to me that my next birthday will be my 70th. Birthdays have never bothered me, but that one just sounds like a tipping point into old age.
I share that thought. I recently turned 62, SS eligible. I won't need to utilize it, but it is there and I am of age to claim it if I wanted.

OTOH, at 62 I still have 20/20 vision and honestly I am stronger than most 30 year olds. I do a lot of planks, push ups, crunches, etc.

Mixed signals for me, but yeah, my calendar is what it is.

When I was at an exercise class and this young lady came up to me and said “I want to be in as good of shape as you when I get to be your age!”

My first old man compliment…

I recall the first time a waitress gave me a senior discount. I actually laughed. Glad for the discount, but don't feel that old, most of the time. Sometimes. But not always.

I've often told friends that getting old is not for wimps. Since I feel like I'm getting old, does that mean I haven't yet arrived?

Maybe about 10 years ago, possibly less I would get up in the morning to go to work, look in the mirror to shave and stuff and at the moment that I first looked in that mirror, my brain would say who is that person?
He looked old, but my brain wasn’t registering how I think but what the mirror says I look like!!!
That was my late 50s

Yeah, then grandkids, I still have a problem with the name grandpa 🫤

I always liked the Beatles song "When I'm 64"

Then, one year, I turned 64. Then, the next year, I qualified for Medicare.

Then, at 70, I signed up for Social Security Retirement benefits, because delaying any longer would not raise my monthly payment.

Then, I went into the hospital three times over 10 years. Also had cataracts removed.

Then, three years ago my wife died, and I bought a cemetery plot and monument and had my own name added to it.

AND in 2 weeks, its Superbowl 60. I remember going to a friends house to see the first Superbowl on his color TV I even remember the teams, the score, and where it was played.

All these things make me feel older and older.

Yeah, right there with you. But as I got older, I realized something important... I WANT to get older. 😳 The alternative sucks.

I had to dig a shallow trench about 45 feet across my driveway today. I was able to use the tractor some. But was still a lot of work. Hit a couple of rocks I could not dig out so just went around them.

I have never been real good at manual labor it always wore me out.

I will be 57 next week.
I'm now sore and beat.

Yeah but it was well worth it working with your helper!

This might be a good place to post an update on Boomers. Between 1946 and 1964, 76 million people were born in the United States. As of January , 2026, over 20 million of them have died. The oldest of the range are turning 79. The youngest are 61. Over half of the lead boomers will be gone in 10 years, then annually, the next birth year will find half of them gone and so on. If you use 100 as the date on which almost all the members of a birth year will be gone, the oldest group will be gone in 21 years, but the youngest group still have 39 years to disappear from this world. And yes, some will make it past 100. I have an uncle who is 102. The percentage over 100 is 0.02 % from data taken in 2010. Maybe someone can update that. Enjoy your life because some day your Check Engine light will come on! ;)
