What was the first straight weight oil you bought?

In the late 70s I remember buying and changing the oil in our 69 VW Beetle with Quaker State SAE 30. I have run straight 30s in several much newer cars over the years, an 87 Caprice that used some oil and in my 2004 Jeep I-6 over the summer months, both Pennzoil SAE 30. I have some Formula Shell SAE 30 in the garage right now, it's what's in the mower but it doesn't even take a quart.

I ran Valvoline SAE30 in my first car, an '86 Toyota Tercel. I lived near Death Valley at the time, so I wasn't all that concerned about cold starts.

The car burned copious amounts of oil, so I used the straight weight thinking it would help. In hindsight, I would have probably been better off with a 20w-50.

Back in the 60's and early 70's, there was a ton of 30w used.

For me it was Pennzoil SAE 30 for I believe dads old lawnmower. Lately, it was some Super Tech HD 30
Valvoline SAE 30, early 70s. My dad and I used to tell each other about the prices we'd see it on sale; IIRC the lowest was about $0.38/quart (38 cents). Getting the metal spouts in snug always gave me satisfaction; ran it in the Ford in my sig..

The first straight weight I ever bought was probably Valvoline 30 in the white can. The last straight weight oil I ever bought, not counting SAE30 for a lawnmower, was Kendall GT1 70 racing oil. I had a 1978 Pontiac Grand Prix with the 301 V8 that burned oil like crazy, so I was running 70 weight in it until the end. That would probably have been around 1988-89.

1974. Havoline SAE30 for a B&S Go-Kart. Can't remember if it was Non-Detergent. I was 7 yo. I bought Havoline cause that's what Dad bought. I wasn't allowed to ride without supervision. I pestered Mom when I got home from school until I had built a 1/32 mi oval through shear miles. My Grand Dad used to have a small engine shop he ran as a side business. I pestered him until I figured out carbs, governors and of course the required straight pipe. You can figure out what came next. I think I made it to 8 before the first broken arm.

Sorry, got to reminiscing.

It’s all good Gene K. My pops still has Pennzoil “with Z-7” additive saw 40 and 30 in cardboard cans in his garage 👍🍻

Man you bastards are old lol..
The first time I used straight 30 was in the late 90's in small engines. IIRC it was Pennzoil?

Skelly 30 weight for the lawn mower at the neighborhood Skelly gas station inn 1968 (I was raised in Omaha, NE).

Back in the mid 80s I remember running Pennzoil 30 weight in the old '70 Beetle my father had bought for my sister and I to learn how to drive on.

For me it was Quaker State SAE 30 API SF IIRC. My first car was an air cooled Chevy Corvair with an opposed six. A 2000 mile OCI was the rule with that engine. 2000 miles seemed like a long way back when I was in High School and college.
