What oil should I be running in my jeep?

97 wrangler with 2.5l 4 cylinder engine. 125k miles. Weather Temps vary from 30's at night during winter and 100 degree days during summer. Currently using Walmart super tech 10w-30 and Purolator filter. What do ya'll recommend?

Thanks

Any ole 10w30 at appropriate intervals to oil type. My OM suggests 7500 mile normal service for the 4.0 (2.5 is the 4.0 with 2 cyl chopped off). I'd re think the puro, in case you get the "high flow" version (so far every classic I ever used). I found this in my last filter, ironically running a puro now

I would use a T5/T6 Rotella with a WIX, because I do

Pennzoil Yellow Bottle 10W30
Wix 51515 (Oversize of 51085) Same overall but longer with the same Bypass psi.

What you are running now sounds perfect.

10w30 is what I would choose in your climate. Supertech oil is fine, and you don't have to mess with rebates or watch for sales.

There is some hysteria on here against Purolator filters but I haven't had any problems with them.

If you want to switch stuff up, that's cool too. Look for a filter with a silicone ADBV if you have any valvetrain noise at startup. Pick one with synthetic media if you want to leave it on for a year or two. Your oil cap should say SJ, try one of the 10w30 HDEOs Walmart carries now (Rotella or Delo) if you want. Stuff like that.

Any 10w-30 will work. I would confidently run Supertech in one. The 2.5 is a long lived engine and really doesn't care.

Other way around :-P the 4.0 is a 2.5 with 2 added cylinders.

Also a shorter stroke- the 2.5 can wind up a little better than the 4.0. But yes, they were even cast on the same foundry lines and the 2.5 blocks and heads had blank metal segments cast on one end to match the length of the 4.0, which were then cut off and re-melted for the next batch of blocks.

I had a 1996 Dodge Dakota with the same engine and it cared not what oil I used. I beat that truck like a rented mule and used Delo 15W-40 and usually a Wix filter. I did not have clearance to the frame to run a longer filter.

People love to bash it because it's low powered, but they are just as reliable as it's younger sibling the 4.0L. I have seen those things get beat on super hard off road in Jeeps and - with the exception of one or two going pop - they do hold up. By "beat on" I mean spending all day at the red line in mud and stuff.

Yup, just keep it topped off between changes.

My old Jeep was always partial to Pennzoil and a Wix filter.

If you're on a budget, the NAPA Silver/Microgard filters are solid and a great value.

I'd avoid the Purolator Classics and PureOnes still, with the whole media tearing failure issue.

I like Mobil 1 High Mileage 10W30 if you want to change it up

Absolutely.

Those old Jeeps will run great on just about anything but in your climate it'd be 10w30 all year round without a second thought. Pennzoil has shown itself to run very quietly in these old clatter traps.

They do like a little thicker oil as well, the Pennzoil HM would be a great choice as it's a bit thicker.

Rotella 10w30 is another Jeeper's favorite, but it tends to be noisier.

I slapped in some Maxlife 10W30 to hopefully cure some seepage that I'm getting from the oil pan and RMS along with a MC FL400s filter. I really like how it's running right now but of course, it could just all be in my mind.

Thanks for the replies. I think I'll stick with the super tech because it's cheap and just use with filters from now on.
