FA24DIT Oil recommendations

Rotella T6 5w30 is popular with Subarus :)

For the filter, here are some good choices:

Skinny can for the Outback:
Ecogard S4615 or any other name it goes by (STP S4615XL from Autozone, Premium Guard PG4615EX, etc)
Fram HP17
Beck/Arnley 041-0859
Hengst H345W
Full 2-OSB005 (some Napas have it or can get it)

There aren't as many options for the fat can for the WRX, except the Wix WL10078 (Napa Gold 100078), which I'm not sure if you can trust it or not :cautious:

Partsgeek has a Full filter listed for the 2024 WRX, but they don't list the real part number for, just a Worldpac placeholder part number :sneaky:
W0133-5396222

If you buy the Full for the WRX, give us the real part number for it :D

Of course, there is nothing wrong with factory filters if you can get them, and maybe by the time your WRX is out of warranty, some more options will appear :)

Switched to M1 5w30 ESP in my FA20DIT now that I can get it < $6/qt. These motors are prone to IVD so VW 504 is nice, plus being so cheap makes 3k oil changes easier on the wallet. I don't get great mileage no matter what I do, so running a more efficient oil like PUP or regular M1 EP isn't enticing.

I've never had an issue with Wix/Napa 7055, my local subaru dealer has huge markups, so going for OEM filters isn't worth the squeeze. These are the taller ones, with the appropriate bypass pressure.

I live in Georgia and see oil temps in the 220s-230f in the summer. That's why I went to 5w30
I'd do the same at those temperatures. Here in the frozen north, the highest oil temperature my FA20DIT sees is 212F in summer, and only 200F in the winter. I'm comfortable with using 0W-20 in the winter, even though Subaru recommends 5W-30.

PP and PUP are popular for these engines. The 5W-30's have very good low temperature performance for a 5W, and should be about as thin as the ESP 0W-30 at around -10F.

If you stick with Subaru's 6-month oil changes, you could also use 0W-20 for winter and 5W-30 for summer if you wanted. If you drive hard enough to get oil temperatures well above 100C, I'd use something thicker than 0W-20.

Ditch the Purolator BOSS. The 14615 filters are very small, don't have much media, and they have very small inlet holes, which is not what you want on an engine with such high oil flow. The Tokyo Roki filters are much better. Another good option is the Pentius XL 3593A, which has a similar design, and should be more efficient.
What about Mobil 1 filters. Would be nice to use something I can get locally.

Yes Mobil 1 oil filters are now made by Premium Guard so they are top quality filters.

Nice

So they should be like the PG Extended/Ecogard Synthetic green

Unfortunately, M1 doesn't have a separate part number for the high-bypass Subarus :sneaky:

They consolidate to the shorty M1-108, which is equivalent to Fram 6607/Purolator 14612. Subaru uses a higher pressure bypass than others do, so you need a filter that has the correct bypass.

Fram supplies OE filters to Subaru, but Fram doesn't offer the correct standard aftermarket filter (the HP17 is a "racing" filter but still acceptable for daily driving)

Since the bore is larger and power/torque are unchanged, the pistons should run a bit cooler, and there will be less pressure on the rings. It's also got a larger oil pump that should also help with cooling.

The bottom end is unchanged for the FA24DIT, but it's a lower revving engine, so the bearings should run cooler. With the low revs and the oil cooler, bulk oil temperatures won't get as hot as they do on the naturally aspirated engines. I suspect this engine would be more tolerant of thin grades than any other Subaru engine.
Nope Redline on the FA24 NA is 7500. I had one the redline on the FA24 is 6100 but can be safely raised to 7000. The RL on m y Forester XT (FA20 DIT). But this is strictly a pedagogical discussion. The rod bearings on the FA24 can likely see a higher psi.

See Glenda's comment. Just make sure you're not getting old stock. You want one that's made in Vietnam or Korea.

I recommended the Pentius XL since it's basically the same filter, but it's got a larger bypass valve. The bypass valves on the other PG filters are very small, especially for a Subaru, not that it should ever really matter with your short OCIs.

I know the Carquest Premium uses the correct bypass so I’m assuming the new PG made M1 filters do too. Unfortunately the details aren’t updated yet. Even the boxes are the old ones currently as well as efficiency ratings.

I was going to piggy back on another thread but it got locked.
I have 2 cars with the FA24DIT engine. 24 Subaru Outback Wilderness and a 24 Subaru WRX. The Outback has 9k miles and the WRX is new with only 300ish. I do not drive a lot of miles in a year and even less now with 2 cars. The WRX will get some spirited drives once its broken in but no plans for track days yet.

Currently running Valvoline Extended Protection 0W20 in the Outback with Purolator Boss filters.

I think I can get Mobil 1 ESP locally as well. Do you think that would be a better oil for both cars? Which grade if so 0w20, 0w30, or 5w30? Was also considering just getting factory Subaru filters. I live in SW Ohio if you are curious what kind of temps I can experience. Maybe -10F at the coldest in the winter and mid 90's in the Summer. I may eventually modify the WRX some with a tune and bolt ons.

Trying to read the old threads but there is a lot of suggestions. I did see a few people recommend the Mobil 1 ESP.

Thanks
just stay with the Valvoline EP 0w-20,it is a excellent oil for your ride, the boss filter is a good one too.

Just picked up some oil filters at the dealer. Was interesting to find they spec a different filter for the Outback Wilderness and the WRX. Not sure why.
OIL FILTER [WRX] - Subaru (15208AA170)
Oil Filter Outback - Subaru (15208AA21A)

My local Walmart does not have the m1 esp 0w30 in the 5 quart jug just the 5w30. They have pennzoil ultra platinum, valvoline extended protection ,and M1 extended performance as well in 0w20 or 5w30. Autozone has it but they are more expensive of course.

IIRC, engines with the oil cooler get the short filter(170) and everything else gets the taller one.

Hood clearance or something even though people have used tall filters with no issues.

Arg, nevermind, forgot the Wilderness has the turbo 2.4. Brain fart.

The Filter for the WRX is a black one made in Japan so maybe that is the main difference.

Found the 0w30 ESP on Walmarts website in the 5 quart jugs and ordered 2 of them.

With fuel dilution issues it might be a consideration changing the oil out every 6 months as opposed to mileage based since you do very few miles. I do this with two of my vehicles.
I am not sure if I will have fuel dilution issues but its something I am concerned about since I make a lot of short trips. I need to do more UOA's.
