Valvoline Restore & Protect

I spoke too soon. 3700 miles in and there was a drop in level. Not enough to trigger a light and it seems slow enough now that I won’t need to add anything before the 5000 mile OCI I run on this thing.

The varnish in the engine doesn’t seem to have changed. But there never was any sludge. I’m not worried about the varnish. But, this is only the first of four oil changes.

How do you know the varnish hasn’t changed?

Exactly. As they look through their Amsoil colored glasses... 😆
I’m struggling to understand why people who use Amsoil would care if this motor oil actually works as claimed? My Elantra has seen probably 90% Amsoil over its life and doesn’t need cleaned.

I sincerely hope this product works as claimed. Innovation is good for all.

Engine design - length of OCI - driving habits and percentage of stop & go help decide a clean engine versus a dirty one.

Heck, my inner engines were really clean back in the 70s and 80s, when all I used was the most popular on-sale conventional oils of that era..... Quaker State, Havoline, Kendall, Wolfs Head, Citgo.

In the 90s I used Castrol, until varnish took over and I had to make a change. In the 2000s and up until 2020, I used Pennzoil. 2020-2023 I used Valvoline and then the buyout of that brand name occurred.

Lately, it's been boutique oils and lets see where that takes me.

Looks to be available in only 5w30 and 10w40. It also states 99% cleaning and here in the states it claims up to 100%.
Probably tougher regulations outside the US. Either way its saying the same thing from different angles. Up to 99% is still a crazy claim though.

Its insinuating that the engine will never be 100% clean. While still making the product sound good.

I just wanted to give a small update. I put about 500 miles on the oil so far.

Some thoughts....

I put 12k miles on my Crosstrek in the past year or so that I had it. Almost every time that it sat for 24 hours or more I had a quick "kazoo" type noise when I started my car. I just assumed that it was building oil pressure and did not think much of it. Well that noise has been gone after the first couple drives with this oil. I have no idea what was causing it, but its gone. It could be anything but the oil was the only thing that I changed.

The car seems to run a bit smoother and quieter. I can barely feel that it is on at a stop light.

Gas mileage is about the same. Well within any kind of margin of error. 32mpg highway. 25 if I'm driving around back roads.

Now for the big one. 1-2k rpm always seemed to be almost like a throttle dead zone. I just got used to it. This oil seems to have brought it back. Its almost like there is torque where there was no torque before. I'm not sure what to think of that yet.

Even if this oil isn't cleaning anything I see no reason why I should switch back to Pennzoil.

That’s what we’ve been telling Malo83 about that Pennzoil 😷

Pennzoil is all that my previous cars seen and they never left me on the side of the road.... (knock on wood). BUT my impression of this Valvoline oil so far is that it is doing SOMETHING. When I expected this to just be marketing bs and run like every other oil I have put in it.

The only reason I used Pennzoil is because project farm. And I understand the opinion of him around here.

V.O.A.s are V.O.A.s no matter the poster . He ( P.F. ) has placed many V.O.A.s for PENNZOIL products .

Thats nice, if this oil is such a big hit. Why aren't we seeing them in Euro grade flavors or wider SAE viscosity ranges?
Are you telling me that if you use this Valvoline Restore and Protect in a vehicle that specs a Euro Grade that it will destroy the Engine?
I am using a Euro Spec Oil in my American Car, and all is going well, tomorrow might be a different story. I may be wrong, but the Euro Grades have a better HTHS Number and some other stuff as well as being able to go like 10,000 miles.

Let's just give this Oil a chance on the U.S.A. Specs for a while, and then go onto your Euro Specs!
