Valvoline Restore & Protect

It is amazing to me how long this thread has run about one simple new package of motor oil. I do not think I have seen another thread run near this long about any particular oil. If one did I would guess it was either about an oil from Mobil or Castrol.
Combining an engine cleaner with a motor oil that runs full OCIs makes it unique….So far.

So what is the general consensus of when to change the filter when using this oil for the first time? I've noticed varying reports from a few hundred miles that had significant buildup to others that had a few thousand on them and were still clean. I'm currently using a Wix XP 51334 on my Honda which is rated for 10k.

I have four vehicles running it and have just been performing normal intervals. No need to swap filters from what I have seen, but someone else may not agree.

Thanks, I'm just now starting to drive this car again that was parked due to a leaking wheel cylinder so I had to start driving the other Civic in the meantime. Since I exchanged the oil it only has 708 miles but the filter itself has 2,298... I extracted the oil and reused the filter due to having so few miles on it. This isn't a filter that I normally use and purchased a few from Amazon so wanted to use it, on my Honda's I've mostly used either the Pure One or an OEM Honda, other Civic has a Boss.

It seems that Valvoline Restore&Protect is North American-only market product.
Is there some other comparable product with similar cleaning properties which would be available in Europe?
I've got a gasser made by GM which during past few oil changes seem to develop oil consumption issue. Also, internals of the engine start showing gold-ish residue. I'd like to deal with that before it's too late...

NB: we have Amsoil here available but for a bit higher price than you get it there.

Thanks

I go by how dirty you think the engine is. What's the top end valve train look like when you look down through the oil filler cap.

would it be an insignia?

Look for ester containing oils, though getting rid of existing varnish is going to be though.

Nope, it's Corsa D with infamous Z14XEP engine (non-turbo).
I don't really care about the existing varnish. I just don't want piston/oil rings to become stuck. Once that happens, all the bets are off.
Although what I understand from Valvoline R&P claims, it can decarbon and free the stuff up, even in worse case scenarios than mine.

Don't get me wrong - the car in question was well maintained - OCIs at 10'000 km with proper (read not cheapest) oil. However, the car is a daily driver in a city so traffic jams, lots of idle, etc.

Amsoil SS if available. It can clean, but to what degree and whether it can remove existing piston deposits is not known.

Tried taking pictures but must be wrong time of the day, couldn't get a good one of the filler cap and I'm charging the inspection camera so I'll have to try again later, here are some pics of 710 miles. I'll see what I can do with the camera but I'll revisit this again after 1k-1.5k, the car is a 97 Civic HX d16y5 w/ 227,990 miles.

Generally I would agree. I however had a Honda civic that I purchased without much knowledge of maintenance and oil that was super dirty on the first change. My first interval of VRP required a filter change about 3k in and then an oil change at about 5k. But from other experience in my moms RAV4 she didn’t need a filter change

That’s a little dark for 710 miles. But I also know the d-series engines can have a lot of buildup due to blow by and the general engine design. Looks like it’s doing a good job of cleaning out the motor

not quite. Apparently it’s available in Australia too. Are you able to source it through eBay by chance?

I tried to place an order on eBay but later on it got cancelled and refund issued.
I suspect the issue is either with high shipping costs or problems shipping oil to overseas.
So yeah, I've tried eBay but that route didn't work

I took a few pictures with the inspection camera but I need to get a card reader to download the files. I tried charging it but the battery is toast so I had to use a portable charger to power it. With the oil I had reused the filter so there was some residual leftover that mixed in with it and was used for only 1,590 miles when the R&P went in.

In short, it depends. If you have a high mileage car that has had longer intervals, monitor for increased noise from the engine bay and have an extra filter in hand.

Longer version:
My Subaru’s filter started making a ticking sound, presumably from the bypass valve opening around 400 miles into the interval. I changed it out and the ticking went away. For my Ru, the filter is directly on top so it was easy to detect the sound. The folks who have filter buried underneath the engine may never hear it if their bypass valve starts opening so take the lack of early replacement need comments with a grain of salt. My Ru was at 155K when I started the VRP run.

This mechanic ran VRP in a higher mileage motor and the customer came back after 800 miles with a complaint of engine noise. Turned out not be a plugged filter. He tore the filter down so you can see the sludge that plugged it.

My first run needed a filter change at 2k miles. I cut the filter open and it was completely clogged through. Probably should’ve changed earlier but i can’t hear the filter because of the location. I have a Honda civic with an r18 engine with 230k miles for reference.
