Valvoline Restore & Protect

Had to go dig up the data ranking graphs with error bars as a side note to this thread since the 540RAT comment popped up - not meant to derail this thread, so will be the only comment about the data. Take his test data with a grain of salt when the possible accuracy and errors are included. Here's the graphs.

As Shannow pointed out in that old thread, the actual official test can have a +/- 20% error. So here's RAT's test data with 15% and 30% error bars.

I dont think Rat540 actually really understands Tribology. If he actually claimed that, it's a pretty rediculous claim.
Obvious he doesn't. Took this right from his Q&A section of the blog this AM. Had to look back in the older section, but here it is. I know he started doing this testing because of wiped cam problems. I know from his ramblings he has no time for people here on BITOG. I feel he's trying to make Lake Speed or some one look bad, along with the people here on BITOG with what he has to say. I used to believe what he had to say, after reading some of his blog its easy to see he doesn't know squat about all the things that oil needs to accomplish in an engine. There is only one oil and one viscosity now that he claims should be used in all the liquid cooled gas engines. 5w-30 Viscosity and Quaker State full synthetic. Euro oils, according to him, are trash and wrong viscosity too with their 40 weights, US speed oils according to him are far superior. I think the guys is just a bit goofy after reading some of his thoughts and unwillingness to test certain oils anymore, and his bad list contains much more than just the Restore & Protect oil. It seems he's gone off the deep end with all his hate for some oil mfgrs. and blenders now. Kinda crazy.

Hi RAT,

I’m not sure if you take ‘requests’ but if you do, I’d love to see you test Valvoline “Restore and Protect” 5W30. They make a specific claim for that product: that it removes 100% of deposits on the pistons and rings after 4 consecutive oil changes. People seem to be giving it good reviews – and are experiencing less oil burning after multiple intervals, probably due to cleaner rings. Can be found in many stores. Curious if it would stand up to your test. Let me know if you can, and would love to hear your thoughts on this product, if you have any.

Thanks,

Hi there,

Valvoline’s “Restore and Protect” motor oil is a snake oil, witches brew, Marketing scam intended to separate gullible people from their money.

They dumped harsh cleaning chemicals into a motor oil and FALSELY and DISHONESTLY claim it the greatest motor oil ever created, and that it should be used starting out with brand new engines. Valvoline is so disgusting and so dishonest that I have lost all respect for that brand.

That cleaning technology was developed for dirty running diesel engines, NOT for clean running gas engines.

Those harsh cleaning chemicals that clean deposits off of stuck rings, also clean motor oil off of every internal engine component. So, long term wear, damage, or destruction is only a matter of time and miles. Buyer beware!!!

That “Restore and Protect” snake oil scam, motor oil should ONLY be used in high mileage gas engines that need help with stuck rings, or else a rebuild. In that case you really have nothing to lose, since the engine is on it’s last legs anyway.

I will not be testing “Restore and Protect” motor oil. Because my Engineering Test is designed to test normal motor oil, NOT an oddball witches brew motor oil with harsh cleaning chemicals in that will cause long term wear, damage, or destruction.

Anyone with a gas engine that is in good condition, should avoid “Restore and Protect” motor oil like the plague.

And anyone dumb enough to put that garbage “Restore and Protect” motor oil in a gas engine that is in good condition, deserves what they get.

There are plenty of good motor oils readily available that should be used. And the BEST one is 5W30 Quaker State Full Synthetic motor oil.

Take care,

540 RAT

Interesting comments, I wonder if he ever tried it. Dumb people, lol. Quaker State Full Synthetic motor oil the BEST. OK...........

I'm just really happy to see that VR&P is doing what's its supposed to do in cleaning the pistons and rings up for a number of people and lowering oil consumption for many, not showing high wear on the engine components is a plus. It's actually keeping wear metals down to some of the really well known best oils out there right now. I see no reason not to continue and keep running it on the long term now that we're seeing some used oil analysis reports in with good results.

It sounds like he may be confusing r&p with par. But still, his comments are out of like either way

I desperately wish that Valvoline would get their lawyers to send that clown a message that he can’t spread false information about VRP. It’s so sad that people actually believe the absolute garbage that he posts as the truth on his blog. He’s an embarrassment to the automotive world 🤦‍♂️

The Wife’s 21 Jeep GC w/ 76k miles had 6k OCI’s done most of its life using store brand synthetics. Until a couple changes ago I decided to back it down to 5k. With the current trend of finding coked rings it can’t hurt to run the slightly shorter oci even if my logic is misplaced.

There probably isn’t much in there to be cleaned and doesn’t use any oil of consequence but I figured it can’t hurt to run a couple OCI’s. This first one I’m going to run at 4k and change the filter out half way to have a look at it. Then go back to a couple 5k OCI’s with it.

Rat was not able to save you 😲

Its been 3018 miles since the oil change, she sent me these pictures yesterday morning when the car was cold before commuting to work. The oil consumption rate on the KIA Rio is starting to flatline at a decreasing rate. Oil dip stick pics are from 1000 miles of progression. The pink towel pic is from 2000 miles, and the darker oil dipstick is from 3018 miles.

Its been one month and 3861 miles since the last dipstick check. The oil level hasnt gone down. We conclude oil consumption problem on the 2013 KIA Rio to be solved with the VRP plus HPL EC30 combo an absolute success. Will be changing the oil next month.

Really impressive Mewbs!
BTW.... how much do you like your black finger nail polish? ;)

Lol thats my friend hands in the photo who owns the KIA, not mine. Im the one who now services her car, before then the car had a steady diet of quicklubes for the majority of the vehicle ownership.

His "rig" doesn't test pressures for wiped cam lobes, it's basically a gear oil test being run on engine oils, and a very crude one at that. Member @Garak did the "error bars" on that test at one point and it was like the first 50 or 100 results were statistically identical.
Hmm… that sounds like a similar machine as Project Farm’s wear tester…

A friend of mine added a can of Rislone to his R&P fill. I know ester vs R&P are different. Do you think there would be any harm from him having the two together in the sump?

Our Kia needs 4.5 quarts. Our last oil change two weeks ago saw four quarts of HPL Performance Plus and 16oz bottle of Rislone Concentrate added about a week later.

Life appears Good under that hood. I did the exact same thing using Amsoil Euro & Rislone last spring. Not interested in discussing any reasons why. These-2 are fantastic Sponsors here and I have more oil of both of these competitors products to use in 2025.
