Both the Valvoline EP and Castrol Edge EP are Dexos1 Gen3 rated. However, the Castrol also holds both the MB 229.71 and STJLR.03.5006 ratings. Dexos1 Gen3 specifically targets reducing LSPI.

Looking at a Lubrizol comparison of the three ratings, it looks like Castrol Edge EP may have the LSPI protection of the Dexos as well as the wear protection, sludge mitigation, deposit formation prevention, and soot thickening found in the MB and STJLR rating.

My question is, which one would be better for preventing sludge and LSPI. Answer is: Probably doesn't matter with early OCIs. What do you think?

Is the 229.71 on 0w20, 5w20 and 5w30 labels?
Last I looked, the 25k Castrol Edge Gold in the latest new-look jug averages about $10 more per five quart jug than the Valvoline EP.

Any particular reason you are hiding from us the year, make, model, engine spec and mileage of what you drive? All that info helps to narrow down the upcoming opinions and recommendations you will get.

BTW.... you could put the Mobil-1 EP oil in the same grouping as Valvoline EP and Castrol EP.

You can't even get the Castrol 25k flavor at the moment...bottle marked that is...

Correct. However, Castrol confirmed to me via email that the recently produced bottles with the old logo and 20k label still contain the 25k ‘formula’. Not sure if the formula is different or not, but it meets all the claims that the 25k bottle does.

They told me the same and I still returned it last week 😆

Esp would be the only competitor for castrol EP 0w20 with 229.71.

It's definitely more expensive.

No particular reason to hide make/model/year, it was more of a theoretical question/opinion talk rather than recommendation. 2023 Chevy Blazer 2.0L I4 Turbo, 25k miles. I'm pretty set on just using Valvoline EP 0w-20, cheaper than some others and adequate for what I need. One of my previous posts went over what I plan on doing to keep the engine healthy.

I can't they'll put 25% on me 😫😩
The reality is that because the US dollar is worth so much more than the Canadian dollar, you can get a better deal on some things when you’re buying them up here. When I do my walking tours in Niagara Falls I get a lot of Americans who tell me that they stay on the Canadian side because it ends up being a cheaper vacation, the hotel and restaurant costs are less once they convert their US dollars to Canadian dollars and get more than $1.40 for every dollar.

I used to vacation in your area from the early 80s to 90s...the Canadians all wanted the USD it worked for us all. I used to stay around Stoney Creek and Hamilton outskirts.

I am in Stoney Creek at this moment! My girlfriend lives there (just a few houses away from the lake)

Also, I love when my walking tour guests tip me in US dollars! 🤩 They sometimes apologize that they don’t have any Canadian money but I definitely prefer US$! I save it up for my cross border shopping trips. I have bought all of my VRP with tip money 😎

Do you own a Mercededs Benz with a 2.0L TGDI engine, or a Jaguar-slash-Land Rover? If you don't then don't worry about it. Both oils will do a decent job. Oil isn't everything in maintenance. Knowing when to change and using decent oil and air filters is also important. The Castrol Edge EP won't make it to 25K miles in most engines, especially in engines with small sumps.
