me and my friend recently acquired a murray made in the 80's. has a 12hp I/C flathead on it, but she burns oil. could the 5k mile oil drained out of my car suffice? 5w30 super tech synthetic, all the non oil-burning mowers we toy with get the syn-blend 10w30. just don't want to keep dumping brand new oil into an engine that's not going to let the oil stay in it long enough to get it dirty!

For the small cost of oil, I would never dump used oil into any engine. I would buy new, low cost house branded oil for your small engine.
Full enough is more important than clean but it would have to be burning a lot of oil before I'd want to put used oil in it.
Using junk oil is like just taking a sledge hammer to it. Use straight 40 or 50 weight oil. If you can re refine your used oil and add the proper additives then go for it.
Very funny. Refine old oil and add your own additives ?? That will cost much more than new oil.
Somehow that doesn’t seem like much of a cost saving measure to reuse 8 ounces of oil.
I would want higher viscosity in an oil burning flat head. How much could you possibly be saving - 15W-40 Delvac is $15 a gallon at walmart.

Why not just run 10/40 or something heavier?.,,
Try the new Valvoline R&P. If it doesn't help with usage just run a good new 10w30 like QS FS,
If it has a Briggs engine that was made in that era, chances are it does not have a steel sleeved bore. This makes them not a candidate to rebuild since there is no good way to finish hone the cylinder.
