Unwilling to accept the data, staying with 2-3k oil changes

Do you have a study or a source to verify, validate, or accredit that sealed oil degrades? I have heard discussions on the subject, but have never come across a study or other accredited information on the subject.

LSjr did some testing and came to the conclusion 3-5 years is a safe bet, but has suggestions for a DIY test to check yourself.
He also has suggestions for "proper storage" to include indoor, off the floor, in a climate controlled enviroment. Cold seems to do the most harm.

The head engineer for the Nissan GTR advocates 2000 mile oil changes for his car and all cars if you want to get maximum engine protection. I can't support or disprove his claim but that is it, there is a video out there with the statement they make.

I do 3,000 with regular or nowadays synthetic blend oil. 5,000 with synthetic. I respect what others do but it’s not for me. I work on cars everyday and I just cannot bring myself to do it any longer. I stand firm in my belief that any manufacturer that says more than about 6,000 is crazy so basically Toyota is crazy. I would go further into detail but I choose not to start any trouble these days because even though I’m right the staff doesn’t seem to agree .

I’ll stand by my automotive teachers statement of the manufacturer isn’t right about everything only some things.

This. I’m not sure lower oci’s help. These deposits start immediately with oil that can’t handle the heat imo. The real question is trying to figure out which oils can keep pistons clean. The other twist is it’s engine dependent as some people never have oil consumption problems.

I couldn't tell you how clean my wife's Santa Fe Sport 2.0T was at +240K miles but i can say it ran just as strong and efficiently at those miles as when new. I used Valvoline Conventional, Super Tech Syn, Napa Syn and STP Syn almost as much as i used the upper tier synthetics. Granted, Valvoline SynPower was used more than anything else. Always at 3k miles intervals.

Data is a broad term. Unless it is accurate and relevant data, it should not be used to drive decisions.

My wife’s 2011 GM OLM seems to have me change the oil probably every 3,700. The car does go only 1.3 miles each way to her work, and back. So I accept it. The Lexus I arbitrarily chose 6,500. Because Toyota arbitrarily says 5,000. But I use synthetic and the vehicle didn’t come with it. Hardly scientific but I have driven 67,000 in about 9.5 years. We were 100% remote for 17 mos or the miles would have been more. Imho this forum is large enough that many have gone 200k+ miles and likely didn’t overthink it and followed the mfg guidelines.

I generally service (or recommend servicing) every 5K. IMO, every year or 5K, whichever comes first, is sufficient for most cars.

If the vehicle sees extremely short trips and/or has issues with fuel dilution or condensation buildup, I change the oil every 6 months or 5k, whichever comes first. Most of the vehicles fitting into this category end up getting an oil change every 3K with this plan.

I was doing the same but I had to upgrade my limit to $3.

I just got a GDI vehicle. 0W20 is the only oil listed in the owners manual. I’m a short trip person. I’m definitely going to do the severe oil change schedule. 6 months or 3000 is what I’m going to do.

Draining Amsoil SS out this week - bit over 5k miles. Lot of winter short trips. Oil looks noticeably darker at the same mileage point as last fill that was highway/summer. I expect a lot of fuel dilution. OLM is around 23% or so...

That is subject as to who is taking the risk.

Supplementally is the vehicle owner wanting the vehicle to last beyond the manufacturer's projected life of the vehicle, and will more frequent oil changes support other maintenance activities that support vehicle life beyond the manufacturing design.

I like changing the oil in my pickups and cars about every 6000 kms, which is less than 4000 miles.
My motorcycles and ATVs about every 2000 kms.

Do you trust the oil life computer in your Mazda and have you ever checked how accurate it is versus oil analysis?

Nothing wrong with that but with a vehicle of that stature and price I personally would be inclined to go above the cheapest oil that meets requirements. Maybe that's just me though..
