Unwilling to accept the data, staying with 2-3k oil changes

Do what makes you happy. If you like using cheap oil and changing it often go for it. I personally don't enjoy changing oil, although in the Colorado its very easy. Like food, I like to eat quality food rather than cheap out on McDonald's. Same with my cars. Amsoil SS is overkill for my drain intervals, but with GDI/short trip winter driving, I can at least have peace of mind internals are staying clean until I can get to it. Having an overbuilt oil gives you a bit of peace of mind in these scenarios.

I've never considered oil a major expense. Food shopping for a week is more expensive than an oil change which is good for at least 3-6 months. Just not a concern.

for the price of 1/3 tank of gas on the truck, I can change the oil/filter using fram ultras and edge 0w40. I change it every 5k kms. The long timing chain one the gen I 3.5eco probably does better the less soot is in the oil, or so I tell myself. It also has a 6 quart sump, which is very small. The Macan is 8 liters, by comparison.

The cheapest oil that meet the GTR requirement is Mobil 1 0w40 I believe. Nothing wrong with that.
Yes everyone here knows that's a good oil. Not sure what your point is. The guy I initially quoted never mentioned about meeting specs just the cheapest oil. I'm not here to read between the lines nor make assumptions. Some here's total aim is to get the cheapest oil and they seem to be very satisfied with that achievement.

I too am opting on the side of caution. Hyundai doesn't exactly have the best reputation for their engine longevity, so I'm going to try my luck with taking extra good care of mine to see how it turns out. Every 3K (started at 200, 1,000, then 3,000) the Forte will get the best of the Walmart synthetics (working my way through a case of Pennzoil Ultra Platinum right now) and Kia filters. If something happens to this engine, I have a clear conscience and more than enough documentation for warranty.
Good plan. I did 2K intervals on my Soul and checked the oil at least every 3 days......motor still "blew up" at 26,500.
I truly hope you have a better experience.

I came to this thread to see the same rehashed videos and the head of the GTR department say that you should change your oil faster then generally accepted guidelines. But then I remember most engines these days are turbo charged DI piles of trash, and no OCI will help flawed disposable designs.

Man, I sound old. Where is @TiGeo when I need him with memes.

I am actually thinking the exact opposite. If VRP doesn’t fix the ( quart every 2500 miles ) oil consumption issues with one of our cars, I am only going to change it once a year since I end up replacing the entire sump between oil changes ( I will still change the oil filter when it’s due ) anyways.

That car has only run on Amsoil SS and HPL until trying 4 oil changes with VRP.

No way I would change my oil once a month.

Which engine is this?

I know that this is an oil forum, so that's going to matter. One theme that often is not seen here, is the conservation of natural resources. I once asked a mgr how often they changed the oil in a shop? He said every 60k. We push it to the upper boundary. then again, that's a business, and the vehicles took 45 quarts. Also, the co. owned them, they were not leased.

One thing that truly bugs me in PA, is the difficulty in recycling used motor oil. I did this dance on Sunday, if you want me to name them, I will, but suffice it to say I had to stop at 6 different retailers just to get rid of 2 5 qt jugs. It's really unpleasant so I try not to overchange the oil because it ends up in the garage.

Just leave the used oil in a shopping cart at Walmart or Canadian Tire. Works for tires too.

haha maybe if I were 20 years old I would. In NYS sellers are REQUIRED to accept 20 quarts per day--if a person came in every day with 20 quarts, imho they are clearly some sort of business. In PA and NJ, no law, therefore no accept, despite having signs that they do. Just unpleasant all around. I'm guessing residents of Phila can take it to the city recycling facilities, dunno. Guy at work said do what I do, pour it down the storm drain, because he too got tired of the shenanigans. Can't bring myself to do that, too soft I guess

To clarify. Your oil burner has only run Amsoil SS and HPL since new?

If so I have to reevaluate some of my theories on high end oils preventing this problem.

I went so hard at the M1 AP, RGT, and VME that I finally have the last jug in use - VME. Oh, and I finally did smell it and yeah it seems to have had ester whereas the AP was majorly PAO.
Point being, during that period the clearance lubes could actually be a great lube that just did not sell …
I’ve also seen where it’s selling fine but they’re coming out with new packaging or new specs and simply want to use the shelf space for their (the oil company) new branding/products so push the old stuff out

History:

2015 Honda Fit ( non turbo GDI….small 3.5 quart sump ).

Car has only seen 90% highway ( I commute to another city for work ) use and only Amsoil SS or HPL PP 0w30 used.

I change the oil always according to the OLM ( PCV is fine )

When I first bought the car, I was keen and did a few UOA and it proved the OLM was conservative so I just followed it.

Car started consuming oil at around 90,000 miles. Current mileage 185,000 miles.

Burns 1 quart ( stable oil consumption, I track it very carefully ) every 2500 miles.

I always wonder if some of these extreme ( mine annoys me because it’s the first car that had used oil but it’s stable ) oil consumption issues were caused by owners who never check their oil level and exacerbated the problem.

I always check oil levels every week because I do so much driving.

Viscosity doesn’t matter, tried HPL & Amsoil 0w40 and same consumption.

That’s the whole story.

I think where VRP did well - they stumbled upon something positive that did not cost allot (like ester does) - and didn’t try for $50/jug
