So if it was not toyota's faut, then whose fault was it? Yours? did you maintain it poorly? Do you drive too hard? Seems to me that the transmission in a relatively heavy truck that is built to be tough should last longer than 53k regardless, unless either you did something really stupid or Toyota sourced a really lousy part.

I find it humerous that a domestic has a failure and are labeled 'bean counter driven' and 'unreliable', whereas a toyota has a failure and it is claimed that it 'isn't their fault'. Sheds perfect light upon the double standard. This double standard goes directly back to the reality that is maintenance - people buy the toyota serivce packages at the dealer without battin a n eyelid... they go to their chevy dealer and feel that they are being ripped off for a coolant flush after 3 years. I wonder which vehicle will proviudebetter lifecycle utility, if one is maintained to a 't' and the other is marginally maintained by the lowest bidder...

Unfortunately double standards abound. Good for Toyota if they fix the issues and provide a high level of service when doing it - great, that is why people pay a premium for the toyota vehicle versus an equivalent domestic. That's A-OK... but let's not overlook the double standard and let's get rid of the concept that toyota is faultless... good on you for claimint Toyota's fault for braking system issues, which they fixed - but at 45k miles, the OE should darn well fix such a critical safety system for free, whould there be the slightest issue - obviously they messed up bigtime in their estimation of design needs to let something hit market with such a poor setup. Yet some think its no bog deal... heaven forbid that ford did this - people would think that Bill Ford himself was out to kill them... but toyota fixed it, gee, theyre swell...

There is a major difference between poor engineering and after-sale serivce level.

The Chairman of Toyota has publicly admitted that his biggest fear is that the company has fallen victim to "Big Company Disease" (believing that the practices that got them to where they are are no longer necessary. I share his concern.

However, as the owner of both a Toyota pickup (Tacoma) and a Chevy truck whose transmission recently croaked at 75K (not to mention intake manifold gasket, AC compressor plus many lessor problems), I know which one I'll buy again.
 
Ford "stepped up to the plate" and replaced all of the underhood wiring harnesses on my 1996 Contour SE/V6 (which, by the way, is not a cheap job..$600 for parts, and 10 hours in labor).

The wiring harnesses failed due to the use of incorrect wiring insulation that could not stand up to the heat of the engine compartment.

Ford didn't make the wiring harnesses--Yazaki did.

Whose fault is it?

I'm going to say it's Ford's fault, since they obviously didn't test the wiring harnesses they were getting from Yazaki to ensure that they were being made with the correct materials. In addition to that, they are the ones that chose this obviously incompetent manufacturer to make the wiring harnesses for them.


(They could have tested the insulation with a $1 cigarette lighter)

I have owned 4 Toyotas a 85 4wd p/u a 92 4wd x cab a 88 camry and a 2006 p/u the best was the 85 and even better the 92 pickups were the best ,flawless .The 92 got rearended and was totalled I was not in it .I now drive the 2006 the engine runs great the build quality isn't much better than my wifes 2002 Ford Superduty .I would say I like the truck and hope it will be as reliable as the older Toyotas but I have a feeling the plastics and the relays and switches are of lesser quality only time will tell .The ceo of Toyota should do what is honorable to rectify the disgrace he and his management caused to the Toyota name.

Please show me where I have a double standard relative to "domestics". I simply pointed out the problems that my Toyota experienced and also that Toyota remedied those problems.

So far I have been accused of being in denial, of being in a cult and having a double standard. All I did was admit that my Toyota actually had problems.

Have your domestics ever had any problems? How were they remedied?

Several of you have a difficult time differentiating between "fault" and "responsibility". The failure of the transmission was the fault of Aisin due to the weak design of the overdrive planetary gear set. It was the responsibility of Toyota.

The link says it's a seven hour job to replace the manifold and it costs 900 bucks. OUCH! From my experience, Nippon cars in general aren't easily serviceable and parts will cost you at least double, possibly up to 5X as much as GM parts.
