The New Fram Ultra......

Went to the local walmart they had (3) of the older style wire mesh left in my application (3387a), unfortunately all three had been opened and two had ripped cardboard boxes. I might try the tough guard for two 5,000 oil changes, seems like a good value at that rate.
I think I'm going to do the same with the Tough Guard. I'm just not a little bit leery of having a Tough guard go one full year?

You know how many people only get their oil changed about once a year when their car tells them to using nothing but the cheapest fram core (extra gaurd) or champion e-core filters that quick lube places use.

Wow, that’s sad to say the least. My last tough guard was one over a year and had twice the mileage stated on filter box. My owners manual says to go 6 months or 5,000 miles whichever comes first also. Guess me having a FRAM ULTRA on for almost 2 years means I’m doing something wrong. Sorry but a quality filter like Tough Guard could handle one year on a vehicle

The Tough Guard is a stout filter, I would have zero concerns about running one over the course of a year and I am planning to use one myself over the course of a year's timeframe.

I trust the Tough Guard, but not after finding out about the Ultra's downgrading with no drop in MSRP.

The issue is that WE KNOW that Fram is putting the new, "improved" Ultra on the shelves ASAP while old stock of Tough Guards and Orange Cans remain and are unchanged unless someone knows of something otherwise. I'm not at all worried about using any Tough Guard at this point in time.

I picked up a few cartridge XG11665's from Amazon and the packaging was the same as before. The filters visually look the same. Then I bought 4 more at Walmart. Same. All still made in Korea, as before. So either this is all old stock or they aren't changing the cartridge Ultras. We'll see. But I've got a pretty good stash now. I will likely run each at least 10k and as long as 14k. But if I come across a new version, I'll run it with confidence, then tear it apart afterward. But based on the filtering data I'm sure I'll still like them better than my stash of Mobil 1 filters. I think I've got enough of both for about 150k of oil changes, Lol!

I did discover that the last XG10575 I put on my Ecoboost is the new version, at least by the markings on the box. I'd love to cut it open afterward and see which version it really is. It'll have 10k on it when it is removed.

I have given a few M1 C-456A cartridge filters to friends. I got them for $3 each awhile back and have a bunch still left. Is that a mean thing to do?

I agree ^^^^^^^^

The Fram Force is in the same boat as the TG.

However.... Finding a Tough Guard is like finding Jimmy Hoffa.......

At least in my area.... Not at AZ, AAP, O Reilly's, Wally world, and Federated Auto parts.

Most of the stores in my area are stocked with plenty of TG filters, perhaps the word is out in your area about the First Branded Ultra and people are hoarding the Tough Guards?

The Tough Guard and Force filters are Fram's best products now 😉

Well, for the past few years I guess I have been out of the loop, thinking that Bosch and Purolator were the best bang for your buck and Fram was crap. After reading on filters this weekend, I am surprised of the huge and loyal following of Fram. I have a new, 2021 Ford 7.3L and want to purchase and put 6 filters on the shelf...... and what I am reading here the Tough Guard is the filter most of you would choose. Is this correct?

It was the Ultra that people were big fans of because it had a depth synthetic media with wire backing. Because of that people were willing to run them for a long time. And they showed excellent efficiency - the best available anywhere pretty much - in lab testing that was posted on this site.

Now it's been changed, and people are sad.

I can't speak for others but I personally don't like the Tough Guards because they still have the cardboard endcaps, but to each their own. For an in warranty 2021 truck, I'd personally use the Motorcraft filters, they are cheap at Walmart. You'll never run afowl of Ford running those if you have a warranty issue.

Good choice.

The primary reason to choose an Ultra would be for extended use. If you aren't going to extend the interval beyond factory recommendation, then the Tough Guard is the way to go.

If the Ultra has indeed broken the "20 micron barrier", i.e. filters particles smaller than 20 microns, then why not use it for however long you're accustomed to? I'm assuming, of course, that other filters DO NOT filter particles smaller than 20 microns.

I switched away from the Fram Ultra to the TG guard a couple of years ago because of startup rattles and piston slap on my 2006 Escalade LQ9. I'm tempted to try this new version and see if it fairs better.

The Fram Ultra is still available. It doesn't have to be the old version. I also don't like the TG and EG end caps. Too many pictures of the end caps off of the center tube exposing the media and glue. Not buying them due to that sloppy manufacturing. Not afraid to say it either. If I had a 2021 7.3, it would get Motorcraft for a few years, at least until the warranty expires.
